Infection and breathless

Hi I have had a chest infection following a bout of flu. I have had amoxicillin and prednisone since Friday and I'm still very wheezy. I wouldn't say it's got worse but hate the fact it's not better. Putting off going to out of hours as they are so busy and I may just be panicking... any thoughts ( I have mild copd) thank you

Hello Lost29, in answer to your question, when you take an emergency pack, you need to complete the weeks course of steroids and antibiotics and you've only been taking them for three days. If by next Friday you still feel the same then go back. Sometimes a weeks course is not enough, I've found that at different times. Hope you feel better soon ✋️😊

Lost29 only has mild copd and it is normal to be wheezy for a while after a chest infection. I doubt they would need an ambulance!

Afer finishing a course of Antibiotic and steroids, the infection may not be completely cleared. GP can give you either Doxycyclene and Prednisolone, or I found ( from my GP ) a good antibiotic that's a broader spectrum than the MetaCillin types, called Cefelexin. I have modereate COPD and it certainly stamped all over the infection for me.

Contact the GP surgery to see their respiratory nurse or health professional to see what help and advice they can give.. if you keep getting infections they can refer you to a pulmonary rehabilitation course, something well worth attending, as the give both advice and 'tools' useful for everyday management of COPD .

And always keep a supply of emergency stand by meds, so you can get infection control started asap, and keep replenishing after using, whilst waiting for GP or nurse consult.

I had the same xmas time, you need to give the steroids time to kick in. Keep taking them for 2 weeks..

Lost29,

Don't let it get you down and lost, I've had 3No lots of antibiotics since 21st December, it's not that unusual for us types at this time of year. Amoxicillin I don't find very effective, try Clarihromycin or Doxycycline with Prednisiolone they seem better suited to sort out a chest infection, go see your GP for a change in meds.
