You should see your dentist or GP if you have an unusually dry mouth (known as xerostomia) so they can try to determine the cause.

Boots do a dry mouth spray and also a dry mouthwash which may help a little. Increasing your fluid intake may also help.

Hi There,

I have suffered with a dry mouth for years now. When I went to the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle for transplant checks, they found that I have Sjogren's Syndrome. This causes a reduction in bodily fluids and can also have many other effects. I'm wondering whether Sjogren's has actually caused all my other problems as one side effect can be fibrosis in the lungs. As others have said, there are gels and sprays that can help with a dry mouth. Ask your doctor about this.

Best Wishes,

Helen

Hello Myh1962 .

I like Helen6 have Sjogren's Syndrome that I got after having Rheumatoid Arthritis for many years. This ultimately gave me lung disease. Somehow it's all connected.

I know how awful dry mouth is. Someone I know who has it takes pills for it. She said it's relatively new on the market but it doesn't make a lot of difference. I have a gel I use when I sleep. It helps for a few hours then I wake up dry again. I have also tried face massages that help the flow of saliva. This may help.

I'm sorry I'm not very helpful. I hope you can find some to relief soon.

Take care.

Hi I have suffered from a very dry mouth particularly at night. It was so bad I got very little sleep. I did some research and found a product called OraCoat XyliMelts made by a company called OraHealth USA. I buy mine from a UK company mouthulcers.co.uk. They are also listed on Amazon and eBay but are more expensive on both sites. I have listed how they work.

I can honestly say they have changed my life I now sleep for 7/8 hours. I have emphysema which I have had for over 20 years. I hope this help. Barbs

XyliMels - Neutral

THIS IS HOW IT WORKS: The XyliMelts adhering disc is placed on the teeth or gums with the tan adhesive side against your gums or teeth. It will slowly dissolve over the next few hours without leaving any residue. Over time, it will release 550 mg Xylitol and natural lubrecants / humectants for effective help against dry mouth.

HELPS AGAINST: Damaging caries / tooth decay bacteria, plaque / tartar and dry mouth (Xerostomia or sicca syndrome). It can also improve bad breath, sore throats, heartburn and difficulties with swallowing. According to US dentists it is one of the most effective products against dry mouth - it can increase your saliva production threefold!

DISCREET & SPEAK FREELY: XyliMelts adhering discs are inconspicuous, as they are worn discreetly affixed to your teeth or gums. XylMelts are not like your average pastilles / lozenges! You can speak freely while using XyliMelts and enjoy its pleasant taste!

AT NIGHT: Are you suffering from dry mouth when you wake up in the morning or maybe it is even keeping you awake? Then XyliMelts are right for you! Thanks to its patented adhesive technology, you can use XyliMelts even while you are sleeping - unlike normal pastilles, there is no risk of choking! XyliMelts help to keep your mouth moist so that you wake up with a pleasant feeling in your mouth.

VEGAN TOP-QUALITY: Contains only natural ingredients and adhesives, no artificial flavors, animal products or dyes! The adhesive techology is protected by multiple patents - in the U.S., XyliMelts is one of the most popular products for dry mouth!

I use xylimelts when my mouth is drier overnight, and they do help cut down the number of times I wake up during the night.

Hi Barbs, I was searching for posts about saliva and been reading through some old conversations here, and found your post about the XyliMelts and have just ordered some for my mum from mouthulcers.co.uk I looked at Amazon to compare, and it’s a lot more expensive at Amazon. My mum suffers from really dry mouth, like sometimes no saliva.

I was actually searching for answers for myself. My mouth goes from very dry with no saliva so I have to drink water to get my mouth wet, to producing ridiculous quantities of excess saliva that sometimes is so bad I’m trying to spit out ropes of thick stuff. One time I had to go to the dentist who was complaining about the amount of saliva I was producing, as if I was doing it deliberately! The dentist said my mouth was overflowing. I was just wondering what’s going on with my saliva.

Hi HungryHufflepuff I’m sure your mum with find the Xylimelts very good. I have been using them for over 2 years and am now able to have a good nights sleep with being woken by such a dry mouth I couldn’t swallow. When I first found Xylimelts I research and found mouthulcers.co.uk to be not only the cheapest but also their service is excellent such fast delivery.

I’m not sure about your problem, have you talked to your GP? If he/she can’t help I would ask to be referred to a specialist who can investigate the reason for you. Please do keep us posted on how you get on. Good luck Barbs x

Thanks. I already got an email from mouthulcers.co.uk saying my order has been despatched, that’s incredibly fast. And the email seems to have been written by a person rather than an automatically generated email. Hopefully the XyliMelts will work as well for my mum as they have for you. I’ll let you know.

I haven’t spoken to the doctor about my saliva problem, in many ways it seems so trivial and silly, but sometimes it’s so bad it makes me wretch if that’s the word, like when I’m trying to spit out these never ending thick ropes of stuff, it makes me wretch so badly that it hurts my tummy and ribs. Maybe next time I see the doctor I will mention it. The dentist obviously didn’t think it was normal for me to be producing so much saliva.

Thanks for all your advice.

Hi Barbs I just wanted to say thank you because my mum is very happy with the XyliMelts. In return, I’d like to tell you about this toothpaste:

animalaidshop.org.uk/toilet...

I bought it for my mum a while ago and she said at first it was really good, it had been the first time she slept through the night without the dry mouth waking her up. But after about the third tube of toothpaste she didn’t feel it was doing as much for her and was quite chalky. Anyway I thought I’d tell you about it in case it’s of any interest to you.

Hi glad your mum is pleased with the xylimelts I know I wouldn’t be without them. You could try your mum with Biotene toothpaste. Large Boots stores stock it or you can buy it on Amazon. Hope this helps. Barbs x

I’ve just ordered a tube of the Biotene toothpaste for my mum from Amazon as there’s not a Boots near me. Thanks for all your tips, I didn’t know about these products. Thank you for telling me about them.

Your very welcome I’ve had this awful dry mouth for several years now. I went all through things from the doctor which didn’t help. I than started investigating things for myself, a lot of trial and error and these are the things I find help me. I am only too pleased to pass on these things if they help someone else. Best wishes to you and your mum. Barbs x
