My doctor has decided to send me for Pulmonary Rehabilitation. She is hoping I'll start exercising and lose weight. I feel this is a waste of time but I'll do it. I can't afford a gym membership and walking is very difficult with my lung disease. All I can do is try though. I get 36 sessions. Wish me luck!
Time for a echo and 6 min walk test too. I expect all to be well.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is really worth while doing, don't be negative about it. It opened the door to exercising for me, you do not need to use a gym to exercise but you do need a little dedication and to keep exercising after it has finished. The more you do, the more you can do, nobody can wave a magic wand and do it for you. I know it sounds a little daunting to start with, but you will soon find you are actually enjoying it and looking forward to the next session.
Yes of course it will. I, like many others here, have multiple health issues. I am taking nitrates for my heart's circulation, have peripheral cardiovascular disease with claudication in my legs, hypertension and severe COPD (Emphysema). I have gone from walking 35 yards before having to give up, to being able to walk 5+ miles. All through exercise. I can even carry a loaded shopping trolley weighing 20 Kilos (44 lbs) up the 3 flights of stairs to our flat, I would like to see a healthy youngster do that, I am 67 this year.
Is PR and exercise worth it? You can bet it is. I did not think it possible to improve by that much, but I have. I was only diagnosed a year ago and my PR only started in November last year and have gone from strength to strength since.
Hi the exercises are specifically tailored for those with lung problems. When I went to mine there was also a psychologist and a respiratory nurse to answer any questions. I only got 12 sessions though not 36. You will also have a chance to connect with others and might even make a friend or 2.
It's not as bad as it sounds, you will enjoy the exercise the physios will keep an eye on you and will only let you do exercises that wont kill you. It will build up to a level that they feel you have achieved an improvement. It may loose you a few pounds but it's the movement they are looking to improve. The walk test will be monitored as you go, you also go at your own speed so don't rush or feel that you have to break any records, if you can't do the full time they will let you sit down and take a breather. You also meet people who are better and worse than you and usually they are a good bunch from all walks of life. I've done 2No and found them helpful a good to do.
Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes are great for people with lung conditions. You learn so much about yourself, your condition, how it affects you and what your limits are.The exercises are targeted towards people with lung conditions.
No need for a gym membership, stretching, simple exercises with weights, some walking on a treadmill and some cycling on a gym bike. The idea is to get people to do simple exercises that work your lungs allowing you to find your limits and then gently push yourself to do more safely. But mostly importantly they want you to do this at home and continue doing the exercises once the course is completed.
The choices are simple, let your condition rule your life or fight back and gain some control over your quality of life. My motto was exercise to get fit mmmm or exercise to stay alive, so if I couldn't be bothered with the first opinion the second option always won.
Thanks Ian. Everyone makes great points. You hit home to me about doing it to live. I fought so hard for years. I really did. Now I've been complacent or have settled for the life I'm in. I've been told this is my new "normal" and I've accepted that. Perhaps I have quit fighting. Not because I'm ready to die but because I feel what good can it do. You make me take a hard look at myself. You helped me to see I need to find my fighter. Everyone is helping. Thank you Ian and everyone else.
