I have never had that. But there are those here who have. And I am positive that the doctors and nurses who do this know very well how stressful it is for patients and will do everything to make it as easy as possible. It is a fairly common procedure and they must have it down to a fine art.

All the best

Nanouf, I've had more bronchoscopies then I could throw a stick at. After the throat numbing ( just a quick spray ) they'll give you the sedation and you won't know another thing until you're finished. Really, nothing to be afraid of at all.

in reply toBilliejean_2

Thank you..I suppose the unknown is the scary thing just the hope I have plenty sedation xx

Just try to relax, it's over quite quickly. I was terrified beforehand but the reality was not as bad as I had anticipated. Good luck x

I had this procedure, didn't find it painful, felt like a sponge being put up my nose, and then being told to swallow,, it will make it easier. Not the friendliest of nurses I have to say., but the worrying beforehand is the worst bit.

Ive never had this procedure and would probably be nervous too. The way Ive got through waiting for nasty dentist's appointments and other scary things e.g. endoscopies, is to project myself beyond the appointment, reassure myself that time will pass, the procedure (whatever it is) will also be a thing of the past later on. You could schedule something nice for afterwards and concentrate on thinking about that. The brain can usually only manage to think about one thing at a time.

Don't worry about the sedation, it really does work and has certainly prevented me gagging with the numerous endoscopies Ive had. Come back and tell us how you got on. Good luck :)

I will let you know thank you x

I hope all goes well. I was sedated and after they put in the mouth guard I went to sleep and woke up afterwards still wondering when it was going to happen

in reply toCarnival567

Hope that's how I am thank you for telling me that x

That's been exactly my experience as well, Carnival. The sedation is a a small amount of Valium but they inject it and the effect is instantaneous - oblivion until it's all over. When you go I to the hospital, Nana, tell them that you are very nervous and they will give you the full amount of sedation.

Hi

I had a broncoscopy 3 weeks ago, and I was told I wouldn't remember anything. I thought yeah right!! However, I can't remember anything! The worst bit was the numbing of my nose and throat, the spray tastes like rotten banana and made me gag a bit, but that's all. The staff were fab too. TBH thinking about what was going to happen is worse than getting it done. Good luck hon xx

Thank you x

Good morning, I've got to go in and have this done and do a biopsy on my lung because of working with asbestos, They said i will be in for 3 days is this normal , 3 days for such a small OP !

Hi, I was 14yrs of age when I had two bronchoscoppy's. It was not a pleasant experience but there is no danger. I was laying on the table when they got me to sit up and take 3 deep breaths. On the third deep breath one of the nurses produced a large enema and discharged several pints of water down my throat. I coughed and spluttered for a while and they managed to get the tube down my throat. Apparently this was done to lubricate my throat so as to let the broncho tube be eased down it. Several months later I had another one. There was no way was I going to take three deep breaths as I knew what was coming next. In the end they gave me an injection (to relax my throat musles) and put me back on the trolley and took me out into the hall to wait until the injection had done its job. I survived the process and I am sure it is a much more modern process these days. Do not worry. On the second one they lost a cotton swab in my lungs and spent ages trying to retrieve it. Regards, Lungnorm

HI nanaof5, Have had one twice the first time no recollection of the test after the spray and calming injection, however on the second one I personally was quite ill when I came round had to have a nebuliser on, but soon recovered with no lasting side effects. Hope yours goes like my first one.

I had one a couple months ago, looking back on it it was no where near as bad as I thought it would be just a slight saw throat ect

Hi have seen your post, it's not the best experience to have but if you tell the nurses

that you gag (Which most of us do) they may give you a full anaesthetic in lieu of a local which solves your worries. The recovery time is a little longer so you may need to take someone with you. If they insist on a local tell them to put a lot into you as you gag, at least that way you will be awake to swallow.

I promise you will survive it but none of us like it but it is necessary for folk like us.

Good luck keep smiling.

... an endoscopy means examination within with a lit instrument. Bronchoscopy is just the name of the part of the body that is being examined.

I am a Very nervous patient and dreaded that bronchoscopy !

It sounds such an awful procedure However it was fine and I felt no discomfort - it was over quickly and the hospital staff were all so nice when I explained I was really afraid !

It sounds much worse than it is ,

G'day Nanaof5.....Please be re assured by the replies you have received...the worst part of the procedure...and that is what it is, not an operation, is the waiting and worrying of the unknown. The procedure is simple enough...just tell them of your concerns prior (when you are in the waiting area) and ask for full sedation..they will usually comply...you will be awake for the nasal spray, not the insertion of the camera,...and the next thing you will be aware of is waking up in recovery...no recollection of what has happened...they will keep you under observation for around 90 mins before releasing you. You may experience slight spotting (Blood) if a biopsy is taken and there is a possibility of slight soreness in the throat...both of these disappear very quickly....Good luck and please do not worry.

First one I had many years ago was horrendous, took four people to hold me down and I thought I was going to choke to death. My own doctor said she couldn't believe they did it without sedation it was barbaric and if needed again I was to insist on sedation.well you can guess how terrified I was when I had to have another but I did as I was told and insisted on sedation. Certainly no problem. What happened ? I don't know I just came to on a bed and was brought a cup of tea. Had more since with sedation it's always fine can't remember a thing. I wish you well but do insist on sedation. Rosabeth.

in reply toRosabeth

Nanaof5 has said in her post she is to have sedation
