You're lying in your bed night.
You've had a cough and pee.
Peering at the clock you see
It's only half past three.
Returning to the land of nod
You count a flock of sheep.
You must have counted umpteen flock
And still you're not asleep.
Not being able to sleep like this
Will make you late for work?
You've been retired twenty years
Had you forgotten. Jerk?
Did you lock the car last night
Now you're not quite sure.
And what about my ailing chest
They say there is no cure.
The thoughts go whirling round and round
You cannot switch them off.
Just to make things that bit worse
You need another cough.
At last when all exhausted
You finally get to sleep.
A very welcome hour or two
Before that alarm clock's bleep.
The sun shines through the curtains
Spring is in the air
And once you're up and going
You feel you haven't a care.
