Hi Jeff

That seems to cover most things that you could possibly have an increased risk of.

Does that mean you will now be tea total and sugar free.

From what l can gather, you are not going bald, you are not obese, you will not get ovarian cancer, you are not schizophrenic.

Many of the risks are very low...thankfully.

Good luck with your new information, l know for you, it's good you have this profile about yourself.

For me personally, it would make me neurotic.

The only thing l would like to have is better screening, when you have a close relative, who had a terminal illness.

My mum died of ovarian cancer....the silent killer, as often you have no symptoms...it was discovered , sadly to late for my Mum.

This puts me and my sister of an increased risk of developing this illness.

Although not a definitive diagnosis, a simple blood test for a raised Ca125 level each year, can be an indication you are in an early, often treatable stage.

This wasn't offered routinely to me or my sister, l have to ask my GP annually to give me this test....my sisters GP will not give her the test.

All the best Jeff

xx

Agree with you there Velvet 55. Husband asked for another prostrate check including psa (he had the last one three years ago)He knows that this cannot be classified as screening because of the misleading psa results can give and GP's don't offer this practise due to this reason, but if psa increase is a cause for concern I gather that a urine test, after DRE, can pick up cancer cells. This was the £10 check everyone was excited about a few years ago - it is only performed privately.

Can your sister arrange for the ca 125 blood test privately or do you again need your GP's consent?

Regards JP

Hi JP

If my sister was a little more insistent with her GP , they would probably do it, but she has chosen to take his advice, that in his opinion your Ca125 test does not indicate it one way or the other....I chose otherwise, and on my GPs advice, have it done annually.

I think normal levels are below 35, my mums was 125 when she was diagnosed.

It costs me nothing,... our GP also knows about Mr V's dad dying of prostate cancer. and gives my husband annual testing, blood, urine and a physical examination....again, he has never charged him.

I know, the earlier these awful illnesses are found, the better chance of survival.

I would quite willingly pay a charge for this screening.

you are right, you need to be very insistent on having standard tests now, even if family history states that these should occur. I found that even getting a standard letter to go "private" for tests is jumping through hoops. I am glad you have an understanding GP, hold on to him/her.

Stay safe

dear Jeff. So what you are saying is that your normal.

Hubby has factor xi deficiency that's approx 1 in 1m I gather and he is the only one in his family. His mother died of breast cancer at 55 and his sister died at 80 with ovarian cancer. In fact over the last 5 years he has lost 5 siblings, all but one (parkinsons) to cancer. All smoked.

He also had gene mapping done at addensbrooks just for the fact that they wanted to study his genetic past, but did not want the results you wanted. Because what can you do. I read in a study that we all have latent cancer and it is kept in check by your ammune system. That's why you shouldn't smoke, but eat healthily, take regular exercise, including swimming and try not to stress. We are not going to live forever, not any of us. But to accept that and then to move on seems the biggest problem we all have.

I am like velvet55. Yes get regular tests but please don't dwell over what "may be" . I am one of the 6% with O- blood and my husband has A- blood and is only 6% of the population. Have your regular tests but please don't stress.

Regards JP

Wow Jeff, I pleased you got the help you wanted to interpret your DNA results. Are you truly sure it's helpful. In the case of illness or disease which can be screened for & enable early detection diagnosis & treatment yes but otherwise isn't it just a worry. Why spoil Wednesday by worrying what may happen on Thursday??!!
