Hi, it does not usually last very long and normally has no pain whatsoever.

I think it depends where you are doing them as to how long they take. The ones I did at a big hosp in Birmingham were very properly done and took 2 hours with rest breaks. Also had to be done at 9 am for best results. At my local hosp, any old thing goes and it's only 15 - 20 mins. No pain but you may feel tired for a few days afterwards. Good luck!

Hi i had one at the hospital a couple of months ago. I think it lasted about 40 minutes & it was completely painless.

In my case the technician sat me in a type of booth with clear perspex sliding doors. He put a sort of mouth guard type thing in my mouth behind my teeth & attached a tube to it which led to his computer. He clamped a thing on my nose so that I could only breathe through my mouth & then took me through various spirometry type exercises.

The final one sounded a bit scary but was actually perfectly fine; he closed the doors to the booth cut off the air & then measured how long I could blow out for. It was fine at no point did I think I would pass out, they are very good & know what they are doing.

One of the tests involved 12 shots of Salamol through a spacer, I thought I would be a trembling wreck but not at all, it had no affect except my breathing improved for a short while! Good luck x

Hi, a spirometry test is indeed quick and simple. A full lung function test involves a bit more. See the reply by PenelopeS above.

They aren't painful but can make you tired.

Hi, thanks for info, they are not painful but I was very tired after 40 minutes as I already suffer with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome for many years. I did inform staff prior to this. So even more tired at present.

Hello Justiny,

You will have had it by now, and all the anxieties will have gone away. I bet it was nothing as bad as you thought it was going to be.

All the best.
