NEW TO COPD
Hi teaport and welcome to you. Nice photo by the way. COPD affects people in different ways and so many live a long and active life by eating well and generally taking good care of themselves. Enjoy each day as it comes. Xxxx
Welcome. Sorry, I can't help with your prognosis questions, as I don't have your condition. But you will find plenty of very helpful people here.
All the best
K
Hi teapot,
I've only got moderate COPD and, aged 62, I fully expect to die of old age at some point -doubt very much that COPD will take me!
Much said about how long we have but in reality no one knows. Just take each day as it comes, enjoy life and watch out for the number 62 bus ... its more likely to end you than COPD!
P.s. welcome to the site!
Hi and welcome to the group. I don't know why some medical people say these things. That's like asking how long is a piece of string. As no two people with copd are the same. But with the right medication healthy eating and exercise most people live for many years I was DX in 2006. And hope to be here for many more years. I wouldn't take much notice of your Dr prodiction.
Hi Teaport, yes this is a great site for you. My husband was diagnosed with mild copd year ago. He gave up smoking 15 years before that. He is 65 now.
What you must do is give up smoking (if you do). Keep away from people who do. Keep away from people with colds. Keep away from any pollutant. Eat healthily, exercise everyday to keep muscles fit. Have your flu jab every year and arrange to have a pneumonia jab. And take any meds prescribed.
Remember that there is a natural age decline in lung function anyway for everyone.
There are many people on this site who have kept their fev1 ratio consistent over the years. When you give up smoking your lung function decline reverts back to that of someone who does not smoke.
Please remember that the condition is chronic not terminal and you can lead an active life.
I am sure you will receive lots of help from other more knowledgeable people than I on this subject but this is what I have gathered from the site over the year.
Regards JP
Welcome teaport,
There you are- all positive comments. Nothing to be scared of. Just look after your diet and exercise and take your medication if it is suiting you. I have moderate copd and take Fostair twice a day and Salamol if I am going to do a physical job of work. Doom and gloom do not exist on this site. JP1954 is correct.....copd is chronic - not terminal by any means. I am not going anywhere and neither are others on here. By the way - if you write in again can you please make the post available to just us and not public. Thankyou
thank you for the advice regards teaport
thank you for you nice reply
That's a load of rubbish! I was diagnosed mild 7 years ago at 55 and I am still the same. The doctor told me old age would get me first. x
All positive words of wisdome, I was diagnosed in 2010 with stage 1 bullous emphysema, after stopping smoking, educating myself of my condition and doing all the right things I feel fitter than I have done in years, I'm just in after being at work all day, been walking 2 of my dogs for about an hour down the park, off to bed now cause I'm tired back up at 5:45 for another busy day at work, my moto is die with it not of it PS I'm not on any medication.
I can not tell you how long you got hete only God know.Just live life dont think about dying wr all will do that when its our time.God bless and breathe easy
Welcome teaport

Don't let illness get you down, I've had heart attacks quad bypass, stroke and many more things I just refuse to let it worry me. I still play guitar, keyboard, pedal steel guitar, use ham radio, put antennas up, study physics, and many more things. I just don't have time to worry. Try it just get into your hobbies or study etc and you just forget you have anything wrong with you. keep happy and worry free Tom
and I'm 82 still have dark hair the photo was taken a couple of years ago and I haven't changed ( BECAUSE I refuse to worry) good luck
okay thanks I was into ham radio once use a scanner for fun to shipping and plane voice
It's a lot of fun we used to talk to the first lot of space experiments we also sent and received SSTV (slow scan tv) tracked them also waiting for them to get into range. I like CW (Morse code) on HF bands also like making PCBs and building stuff. it keeps the mind active and we make many real friends in every country, no mater who is on King or pensioner every one is equal in Ham radio. try not to worry and just enjoy life good luck Tom
