I would like to know how many years you have left once you go onto oxygen?

How long have a lot of you been on it?

Some are on oxygen for a year or less and some for over 20 years. Others die without ever using supplementary oxygen. There is no answer to your question.

In response to the other bit of your question, I have been an oxygen user for 9 years now.

Hi that is hard to answere as everyone is different. Iam not on oxygen and was diagnosed with COPD in 2006 . I am 58 years old. And I hope i don't have to go on oxygen. But I think there are people that are 80 years old and who are on oxygen x

I have been on oxygen over two years but that does not mean that I will expire at the same time as my friend who has been on it the same time. I try to eat healthily, and exercise properly and do as much as I can to keep myself as well as possible, so just because I am on oxygen does not bring the end closer. It is not a death sentence.

I use it as a tool to be able to do lots of things I can't manage without it, it is a godsend for me.

take care

What kind of things are you able to do

For me I am able to breathe much better and I can go shopping and have a walk around. I do the washing and cooking, I have to be careful of course but without the oxygen I think I would be housebound.

take care

I too like pollyjj would be virtually housebound without the use of oxygen. It has given me a lot of my life back. Apart from being able to do the normal things around the house I have washed the car this morning, mowed the lawn yesterday, cut the privet hedge and do most of the gardening jobs. Oxygen is is just another form of medication the gives you a better quality of life.

Enjoy the good weather.

Regards. John

This is a "How long is a piece of string question". It's impossible to answer as everyone is so different.

On oxygen or not on oxygen tells you nothing about how long you might expect to live. Unless, of course, you're for some reason trailing it behind you out in the road and don't notice the bus coming.

Don't worry. Sue x

I've been on O2 for nearly two years, to begin with for 16 hours now for about 15 mins, unless I have a bad chest infection. x

Hello, My husband has been on oxygen for about three years I think now. When he was prescribed we really thought that it must be all over. Well how wrong were we - oxygen is prescribed to keep oxygen levels above the 88 level by doing this the oxygen prevents damage to other internal organs. For some it also helps with breathlessness - it has been so for my husband and actually gave him a new lease of life. xxx

I hope so too - it is difficult to get your head round at first. It felt like my husband was obviously so much worse and that oxygen was the beginning of the end. Truly it hasn't been. Good luck xxx

I was diagnosed with emphysema in1988; I'm 69 now, on oxygen for about 7 years. I don't do trampolining any more, but I don't let my "condition" stop me doing stuff I want to (unless I'm ill). I know that I will get worse, that breathing will get harder ... but right now, I make the most of what I've got. I walk to keep my lungs going, do the garden and so forth. The happy pills keep me going.

Take care
