I used a heat pad, the ones that you can warm up in the microwave, hold it to your ribs when you cough, it will give some relief, that and paracetamol, my doctor would not prescribe anything stronger because I also have asthma. Shirley x

Hug a pillow tightly to yourself. Learned that when it helped me after open heart surgery.

I have recently completed Pulmonary Rehab where were taught Autogenic Drainage breathing which brings up the mucus without the need to cough. Coughing causes more mucus which makes you want to cough more and so the cycle goes on. Coughing needs to be avoided.

Get hold of the 'Flutter Device for clearance' as well. Find them in the internet. Its has not stopped my cough totally but it all helps.

Hallentine, this is a very good idea. Gently does it.

Hi Rikki, sorry that you have this nasty pain. I had the same a while ago. My GP prescribed me some Fenbid gel (Ibuprofen) to apply hwere it's sore. It wasn't instant. It took a few days to settle. Also perhaps gargle with salted water and sniff some in your nose to disinfect nose and throat. Warmth can help ease the pain too. Oh I hope you feel less painful soon.

Hi Rikke.

So sorry you are having so much debilitating pain. I find that a wrapping a folded towel around the rid cage and pulling it firmly when I cough helps me a great deal. Not ideal but it works! It keeps the ribcage from expanding when you cough which is most likely to be causing the pain. Works for me every time. Good luck.
