Good morning I wanted to ask if any one with bronchectasis and copd experience terrible cramps and spasms in the lounge area and legs aswell as joint pain.I have started getting this regularly.
And especially when just tieing my shoe laces or bending for something.
My joints are also achy and feel sore.
I am still active walking everyday but feel uncomfortable during and after.

I was getting terrible cramps and muscle spasms during the day and at night. I was taking Trimbow inhaler at the time and had been for a couple of years with seemingly no side effects. The nurse suggested I might like to try Trelegy. I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic as my breathing was doing ok but I changed a couple of months ago and haven’t had cramp or a spasm since….so I presume Trimbow was the culprit
Oh I see I just got some blood results and it shows very low lymphocytes and vitamin D deficiency. I think it could be this reason. Its not comfortable at all I am afraid to bend over now
You could take a vitamin d supplement and eating the right amount of protein can boost your lymphocyte production, protein foods like cottage cheese, egg whites, beans, fish, chicken or turkey breast without the skin, and shellfish can all help x
For a number of years I took medication from gp for cramps. I then stopped taking it and haven’t had an issue since. Worth talks to your gp about it. Tablets contained quinine. I did try drinking tonic water but wasn’t effective for me I’m afraid.
I used to get foot cramps, toes would separate like eagle's claws. I drank FeverTree tonic before & during my Pilates classes. FeverTree has natural Quinine in it, more expensive but worth it. It really worked. The cramps were much worse whilst on Seretide, now on Fostair and improved as has the thinning skin & bruising. We're all different.
Vitamin D deficiency has a lot to answer for so I hope you can buy some D3 or get prescribed a sufficient dosage. You could look it up on the NHS website. (I shall have to look up lymphocytes)! Good luck. P
Vit D deficiency can and does cause some nasty symptoms. I had achy body and felt so low, lethargic and unwell. Bloods showed Vit D so low..was initially put on Hux D3 40,000 unit caps for 7 weeks, now take Colecalciferol 800 mgs daily. Obviously has made a BIG difference 😊 Hopefully your gp can help as mine did. Best wishes. Dawn.xx
I have mild bronchiectasis and asthma. In 2018 I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, one of the many symptoms is muscle cramps. This can be a result of low/borderline magnesium, vit D & calcium with high parathyroid hormone. It’s a very fine balance between them all. Vit D best taken in an ‘oily’ capsule with milk. Mg to be taken 2 hours before/after calcium. You can get Mg spray which is excellent gir calves, I use it at least twice daily. Hope this helps.
I buy Pharma Nord Bio-Vitamin D3. They are not cheap but it’s all about quality. I personally get the 1000iu and usually take 1 per day in summer and double up during dark winter months. They are available on Amazon.
I used to get terrible cramps but this was due to my statin. Are you by any chance taking a statin like Atovastatin, Lipitor, Lescol or other statin? Cramps were far less when GP changed my statin.
I would speak with your gp and see what they suggest. I get cramps if I move a certain way, fingers, arms legs, chest just about anywhere and have to move to get rid of them. I have upped my vit d and started on magnesium with B12 which seems to be helping x
Yes, I am afraid it goes with the disease, enforced activity reduction and aging. The link is helpful (if American). It started for me aboiut a year ago and is progressive. As yet I can 'stretch' the spasm out, although it hurts of course. However it uses up oxygen so I doubt I will be able to continue for long!
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a health problem with high morbidity and mortality. Long term inactivity, corticosteroid use, insufficient nutrition, decreased anabolic hormone level, hypoxemia and electrolyte imbalance may lead to nocturnal leg cramps through causing peripheral muscle dysfunction.7 Sept 2018
Nocturnal Leg Cramps and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary ...
I get joint pain and occasionally cramping in the legs. Sometimes my fingers space out. I have bronchiectasis and ulcerative colitis and the pain is usually in my left hip where the UC sits. I took magnesium tablets for a while and have turned to a magnesium spray now which has helped my restless legs and joints We all react differently to supplements and meds so best to talk to a GP first. Take care x
Just saw your post about gp visit. So pleased gp now seems to have guided you to the right treatment for you. Keep taking the tablets..🤪..sure you will a lot better probably after 3/4 weeks. Best wishes. Dawn.xx 🥰
