Hi im not on it but have the other inhalers you have. Is it yo make the mucus thinner so canbe coughed up easier ? Im sure someone on here will be able to give you more info . I know how you feel in the quickness health has deteriated as im in same situation . I think the best thing we can do is keep as healthy as possible . I also dont go anywhere public without using first defence spray and have hand antibacterial wipes with me. This year ive been theworst ever prompting lots of new tests and being on almost continuous antibiotics steroids since before xmas . Take care love Judith xxxx
Thanks for your reply It is very frustrating .. I feel like I am 2 different people ..before dec2012 and now ..what is a defence spray ? I do get very worried even going to the docs lol sitting in the waiting room with all those unhealthy people .Do you know what your triggers are ? I have no idea about mine, I think life would be easier if I knew .. Jan xxx
could be vicks 1st defence spray, at 1st sign of a cold spray each nostril 2 or 3 times, stops the cold from going further, triggers could be, perfume, hairspray, smoke, anything what you have trouble with and your breathing goes like whoo.thats a trigger so avoid it,cold air is a trigger for many of us, so try wearing a scarf as others do over your mouth and nose,i,m sorry your having all this at the mild stage,it seems we are all dfferent,i,m stage 2, I,m ok up 2 now,xxx
I'm going to get me some of that there 1st Defence for when venturing in to the big wide world - particularly the flipping Tube.

Hi Jan i use the boots own version of vicks 1st defence i thinkit just helps protect the nose from germs entering as most colds flu etc are breathed in. I also do try very hard to not touch my face if been in public ie shopping trolly door handles the cash machine to get the jist . I have no idea whatsets me off either ive had skin tests and not allergic to anything. I lead a healthy lifestyle i ride my horse get fresh air and train with a personal trainer weekly!!! But five winters ago wham these infections hit me . Fine all summer but this winters been the worst ever. Its awful especially more so my specialist is still working out whats wrong with me. Anything else let me know take care Judith xxxxx
I'm on the same medicines as you lilysausage. I take Mucodyne. It helps break up the gunk in your lungs so it's easier to shift. I was diagnosed 3 years ago with very severe emphysema. Before that, even though I smoked, I could do what " normal " people do. A few weeks after giving up smoking, for another reason, I was diagnosed with this.
Hi lilysausage, i have been on Mucadyne for years,, keeps my lungs clear,it takes a wee while for it to start working so don,t give up on it straight away,,i really don,t know what triggers your attacks,,i,m one of the lucky ones that don,t get infections very often,,although i have had copd for 8 yrs,, i think walking the dog helps, deep breathing and all that,,might take me awhile and i do the same route generally so i have my pit stops as i call them to catch my breath,,hope you feel better soon,,chrissie x
Hi Lilysausage I am also on seretide 500, ventolin and mucodyne. I have also been started on Spiriva. The mucodyne has been prescribed to you because you have a lot of excess mucous in your lungs and airways. The mucodyne helps thin it down and break it up, so that it is easier to cough up all the gunge. As far as the First Defence goes I can only think that it is a product that you can buy over the counter from any chemist in a spray and its purpose is to stop a cold developing. It is made by Vicks and although I have never used it I have heard a lot of people swear by it. Thinking about that I should probably get one as well because as we all know once we get a head cold it goes to the chest. Hope that answers your questions! Take care.
Thanks for verifying my answer twiceshy 3, although pleasingly were able to provide more detail. I have never used it myself but it is probably worth getting it in, just in case. Keep well. xx
Yes I do ,they are to help thin the mucous I'm told ,to facilitate extraction of the stuff /clear the lungs ,I've got non cf bronchiectasis and asthma ,keep positive and DONT smoke .
i use first defence has well and if i feel any signs of a cold comming i then use it and touch wood have not had a cold yet this winter but we have had a mild winter here has i cant even remember haveing to remove frost from car windscreen ..well apart from today..good luck
Hi,
My first response to a question, but in relation to Mucodyne I have been on it for about 15 months, 2 tabs twice a day.. I also use the same inhalers as you plus Spiriva Respimat. I assure you it helps, anything that will help you get rid of mucus from the chest has to be good. I suggest you use it and you should feel the benefit when it gets into your system . Good Luck.
Hiya lilysasauge,im like you got told just under 18mths ago that I have emphysema, mild to moderate(3) now moderate to severe(4/5),on spiriva,seretide500 & 2ventolin onhalers a month.Had 4 chest infection and 1 lung infection so far this year, in hospital twice in two weeks so np exactly how you feel. All you can do is take it easy as much as possible and stay positive (easy when you don't have chronic depression lol)find that a nebuliser works good for me but can only get this in hospital, sorry can't be much more help:-(, good luck with the new med I hope it goes some way to make life easier for you take care of yourself x Aidi
Hi Lilly I also take Mucodyne 3 times a day. Don't expect miracles with it but it does help to shift the mucus when taken regular. I am on seritide 500 and Tiotropium. All seem to be helping hope all goes well and no noiticed side affects.
Thanks everyone.. That was really helpful, I will give it a go I gave up smoking 7months ago .. I do eat a very healthy diet and I have a little dog that I walk 3 times a day (Lily ) .. I have depression as well which i am on medication for .. This site is great I have learnt so much already Thanks again Jan xxx
Hi Lily, a warm welcome to you.
I was started on Carbocisteine/Mucodyne this time last year. Two capsules three times a day. It takes a few weeks (3?) to kick in but oh my golly, what a difference it makes.
Oct '12 to March '13 I had my longest infection. All that time one antibiotic after the other and I was almost suicidal with it. Too weak and feeble to go out, living between sofa and bed, it was miserable. My life as I knew it was over.
This simple medication I swear has helped change my life - plus other things like coming here and learning about breathing techniques, PR, talking with people who understand, taking extra Vits B12, C and D3 and Manuka Honey 20+.
The mucus becomes thick, sticky & hard to shift there by leaving a disgusting warm breeding ground for bacteria to multiply. Carbocisteine thins it making it easier to clear.
For me it also helps with my sinuses.
I learnt at PR that it's important to take a maintenance dose of two caps twice a day so it's already in the system when you get unwell, then you simply up it to three times daily when you need to.
I'm also on Seretide 500 twice daily (when I'm well I can taper it down over time to 125).
My blue reliever is BreathEasi.
I also take Montelukast every night which helps the allergy aspect of asthma.
Good luck Lily. You will learn lots here to improve and I hope that like me, from now on you will be able to better manage your lung problems. From April 13' to Dec 13 I was infection free, it was wonderful. Time to rebuild my immune system ready for this winter when I had one in December for a bout 6 weeks plus one I'm just getting over.
It's important to have the correct antiB. Most of us here find amoxicillin useless, I always politely refuse it when offered. Best if the GP gives you sputum pots to give samples for analysis on which is the correct antiB for that particular bug.
Good luck and all the best. Hopefully you'll be well soon and can rebuild your immune system ready for next winter. Peeg
Yes i take mucodyne but with a different package of drugs apart from seretide 500. I have bronchiectesis and it helps shift mucous. xx
I take tow inhalers my regular blue one and a steroid preventer but I know what you mean when you say you can't believe how the illness has effected you, I went from stage 3 to stage 4 and the difference is huge.
Be careful with the steroids they are not sweets, the way they dish them out at docs, like sweets, destroy you, look for other help to.quick fix to get rid of you
I know.. I have a stinking cold this morning and my chest is bad .. But I'm not going to the docs yet .. will try and keep going with my inhalers
