MONTELUKAST and FOSTAIR are they still the best ?

I have been on Montelukast and using Fostair 100 for 3.5 years and was happy with the result but over the last year I seem to be coughing and have mucus coming up quite often which I have read is commen with these .

Are these 2 meds still ( modern ) and being prescribed or is there something better more up to date if that sounds right, my sister in law said I should be on something more current as she has been given 2 different ( better inhalers ) Thanks for any advice

I've been on Fostair 100/6 for about 4 years now and Montelukast for about 4 or 5 months and asthma has never been better and I am getting sore throats but it been pitting it down to the fact I have an autoimmune disease although there not sure which one it is yet we've discussed a few but let's wait and see

My consultant put me onto Fostair 200/6 - MART. It’s an off piste use of this level of Fostair but she felt it would really help me - along with Montelukast, Spiriva, Omeprazole, Fecofenadine, a steroid nasal spray and Carbocisteine. The combination has worked pretty well for me and - enough for me to be signed off from the Respiratory Clinic twelve months ago. I also have steroids on repeat for as and when I need them, along with antibiotics (my GP knows me well enough to know I only use them when absolutely necessary). Every person is very different in their asthma needs - and if you feel your meds are no longer fitting your asthma needs - then please, please - make an appointment with your GP or Surgery Asthma Nurse and get your Asthma reviewed. Your meds will be adjusted according to your needs. Good wishes for your improved asthma health….😊

Your the first person I have found on similar medications. I would be interested to hear your journey and thoughts on how to control your asthma.

I see you are being helped by the Southampton Respiratory Clinic Bigoil. That was the clinic that I was with - and cannot praise them enough.. it took from September 2019 until September 2023 to get the right combination of meds for me but, they were 100% percent committed to finding the right combo. Once signed off - I was given a’golden ticket’ inasmuch that I could call the consultant’s secretary and book another appointment - or telephone consultation if I felt things weren’t going to well. As I was still getting breathless, the consultant booked me in for a heart electrocardiogram at the hospital which was a very fortunate move - as they discovered left ventricle hypertrophy, so another Ed to add to the list….🤣😂

The best treatment is what works for you, not necessarily for someone else or because it's more modern. I am on both and the Fostair was prescribed by my consultant in tertiary care. It works for me and so does the montelukast - though he doesn't like that one and I think he needs to be more open to individual treatment needs as not everyone responds the same way.

I also take an older drug most doctors don't like that is very 'marmite' - but it works well for me.

However, with any asthma treatment, old or new, if you're not well controlled on it (using reliever more than 2-3x/week) or having coughing/mucus then it may be those treatments aren't the best for you right now and need adjustment. And it may be that there's something newer that works for you, but it may also be a treatment that isn't especially new.

I have been on montelukast and fostair 200/6 for about 4yrs now along with Relvar 184/22 and alvesco 160 and bricanyl rather than ventolin as it stopped working . I was very congested and couldn’t breathe for mucus every time I lay down and I spoke to asthma Uk and they recommended Dymista nasal spray, and my dr put me on fexofenadine in am and 3 x piriton at night and it seems to work for me with the added antihistamines

The best is subjective.... what is the "best" for one won't work for another.. if you feel they aren't working as well it maybe time to change.
