A few years ago I took montelukast for a while and although it made a great difference to my asthma and skin I stopped taking it due to dreams that felt so real I wasn’t sure what had happened and what hadn’t. I was also having what I can only describe as very dark thoughts. Fast forward to recently and in an effort to reduce the number of steroids I’m taking, I decided to give it another go. I lasted 4 weeks but have had a similar experience, so stopped about a week ago. However, I don’t feel like I’ve snapped back to normality like last time and still feel in a bad place. I’m not normally someone who suffers with mental health issues, so this is notably unusual. Has anyone else had a similar experience and how long did it take to get back to normal please?

The first thing you should do is talk to your physician about it. It could be caused by interactions with other medications, or some other factor entirely. Regardless, any concern about side effects or possible interactions should be discussed with your physician and reported by her/him to the governmental agency that tracks drug interactions and side effects in your country.

Also, suddenly stopping medications for serious medical conditions like asthma can have very dangerous results. You should discuss how to safely stop the medication with your physician -- this also allows them to monitor you and watch for any problems that might arise in the short term.

My experience almost mirrors your own. Exactly the same and when i spoke to my health care team they almost spate in my face saying it cant possible be montelukast as its the best most wonderful medicine there is..... banned in almost the entire USA and some other countries due to it being directly linked to suicide and othe mental health issues. Yet here we are told that its the safest drug out there. Now i know it has helped thousands and thousands in there asthma struggles and im thankfu it has worked for them without any lasting side effects but its not a one shoe fits all drug i too had to stop it myself against consultant and other respiratory doctors i still have it on repeat prescription as to remove it would be more hassle than its worth but i do not take it never will. As for recovery from said side effects it took me almost 4 months to return to my sort of normal. So to summarise It is the montelukast your not going insane or falling down a dark well it will get better. One mans medicine is another mans poison if you are going into doctor/consultant to try and have this medicine removed a simple google search should show you enough information on montelukast print it off and have it on hand for your appointment. Lastly if you are still worried about your health please dont hesitate to contact nhs or thanks to my montelukast journey the samaritins helped me so much it was actually during a call the caller made the connection between montelukast and my emotions as strangely she too had the exact same issue a few years prior. Good luck and dont forget you got over it the last time take each day as it comes you will bounce back

Thank you. That’s how I’m trying to view it. It’s a weird juxtaposition when I can process logically why I feel this way but can’t stop myself feeling it. Like you say - I got through it once, so im sure I can do the same this time. Safe to say there’ll be no 3rd attempt!

How are you now? Iv just started it the other day but the wierd thing is it I’m already depressed & suicidal from the lung issues ( wierd combo of chronic bronchitis/ asthma) which has ruined me for the last three months with no end in sight. So I’m wondering how I’ll react on montelukast! I guess it can’t be much worse!

I ended up having to make an emergency appointment, as I was in a seriously bad place. My asthma nurse and the doctor were brilliant. They assured me the side effects never lasted more than 2 weeks after stopping. I’d say that was about right but the residual anxiety remained a while longer (I’m not usually an anxious person) and I felt pretty fragile for a while after. Weirdly, despite the side effects, it did have a really positive effect on my asthma and skin, which had kept me in a good place until the last few weeks. I know lots of people don’t suffer the side effects at all, so I’d say give it a go but stop immediately if you notice weird dreams/dark thoughts. The more research I did about it afterwards, the more I discovered the side effects were well documented

Hi

Hope you are feeling better. This is definitely due to montelukast and with some asthmatics their asthma makes you suffer with more side effects and as suggested by others… every meds responds differently to each individual…. least said my daughter had same side effects due to this medicine and we stopped never tried again … your consultant should consider other options of treating your asthma although it’s not always easy and a lot of test and trial is needed… just wanted to reassure you it’s montelukast side effect
