If you’re concerned speak to your GP but I’m on maintenance prednisolone 20mg and had my first vaccine while on 40mg and 3 days after discharge from hospital and they were happy to give it to me
Hi, it’s probably a good idea to check with your gp or consultant...my consultant advised differently to Js706 and said don’t have it whilst on pred. But it might just be a matter of opinion of the medics.
If that was the case I'd never get it. That is the ideal with the flu jab too. About twice have I been off pred for that and it meant it was delayed. Ever since it's been let's just do it now. They don't even ask now though. So who knows with this but my cons, specialist AN and GP have not said anything.
Maybe it was just my consultant being cautious.
Maybe there's a difference between a course of pred and maintenance? Like if you can be off them maybe they think that's better? I guess a lot of CEV may well be on constant steroids - not just asthma sufferers but other conditions too.
I’d say it’s definitely going to be the case for many severe asthmatics that they are on maintenance steroids at the moment. It’s been two years for me on pred now and my consultant or GP haven’t said mentioned anything about not being able to have the vaccine?
Hi. I’ve trained to be a vaccinator. Being on steroids is not a contraindication to the vaccine, but if the steroids are causing some immune suppression then your body may not mount quite such a strong immune response to the vaccine ie be slightly less effective. But I don’t think anyone knows for sure and it is much better to get on and have it. There are many people on immunosuppressants of one type or another. Allergy to any of the components of the vaccine or previous history of unexplained anyphylaxis are the contraindications, as well as being ill with fever( in which case you shouldn’t be at the vaccination centre anyway!) They will talk you through all this at the time of your consent. Hope that helps xx
