Pneumonia Jab

I had a pneumonia jab about 12 years ago and was under impression they were for life. I have recently read that they should be renewed every 10 years and that over 65s should get them. I am 69 and have 3 lung diseases. Can anyone clarify? I am waiting for a response from consultant.

Hi

I know people without spleens or who have kidney conditions have top ups every 5 years or so, but not sure about the rest. You may get more luck calling your GP surgery and asking (or ask when you get your flu jab 😉). They are more likely to know what what regarding vaccines as they are the ones who give it 😅😂

Hope this helps and you get your answer soon

I had to have one recently whilst I was shielding due to being in the higher risk category through my GP surgery so might be worth speaking to them rather than wait for your consultant.

I had a pneumonia jab 20 years ago, and like you was told it was for life. When I went for my flu jab 2 weeks ago the system said I’m eligible for the pneumonia shot again. When I queried it, they had no idea - they thought it was for life as well (bar problems with spleen, which I don’t have). Nurse was going to check it out and get back to me - still haven’t heard, so I’m interested to discover the verdict in your case.

This is what is said my NHS England about elligibilty for Booster doses:

"If you're at increased risk of a pneumococcal infection, you'll be given a single dose of the PPV vaccine.

But if your spleen does not work properly or you have a chronic kidney condition, you may need booster doses of PPV every 5 years.

This is because your levels of antibodies against the infection decrease over time.

Your GP surgery will advise you on whether you'll need a booster dose."
