Morning everyone I have just returned from a very nice holiday in Somerset, as lovely as it was it rained most of the time. I would love to go abroad but just can't get insurance as I have been in icu recently. Can anyone recommend a company that will not charge the earth to insure people like us?

I can't recommend any particular company but if you go through Money Supermarket or Compare the market & search for pre-exisitng medical conditions (or even put that into Google) then you'll fairly quickly find the best deal you can. In my experience there are big differences between companies because I think they all specialise in different things.

I've used Explorer Travel Insurance for several trips, including a couple to the USA. They have a comprehensive set of questions for each medical condition you have and I've found their prices and coverage to be excellent. My asthma is moderate but usually well-controlled and I didn't have to pay an extra premium for coverage. You're then provided with a supplementary sheet that details the medical coverage/conditions in your policy.

Of course, the test of any insurer is making a claim and I don't have experience of that - but I did note on their homepage that Which? featured them in their 2014 travel insurance review.

I have a friend who has a bad heart and has been in and out of hospital in Icu for the last couple of years. They are travelling to Cyprus in December and she has got insurance with a company called Voyager. Worth a try.

Because I have multiple conditions, last time I went to US, for a month, 4 years ago, travel insurance, through specialised company, standard ones wouldn't touch me, cost £350.

This year, as I had two hospital admissions, total, 16 days, and have contracted psudeomonas, insurance, for 3 weeks was whopping £750. Too much. Last time flew London to Wasing ton to LA to New York to Washington to London for less. That will probably have been my last trip, especially as mobility now buggered.
