Rant about my GP (feel free to ignore!)

My Gp surgery is driving me insane

Rang yesterday to check if prescription i had ordered prior to going into hospital was actually there as couldn't remember if had ordered one item to be told couldn't answer that over the phone. fine so got someone to drive me down there and no prescrption but i am helpfully informed by the receptionist that

""Dr %^&% has cleaned up your repeat""

I handed in a hospital discharge letter on Monday.

""cleaned up"" means has removed drugs, 9 in total, including calcium, bonviva for osteoporosis, nasonex, eye drops, for hayfever, ventolin and atrovent nebules,

AND prednisolone which i have to take all the time, omeprazole and telfast.

I pointed out I NEED the prednisolone or will end up in hospital to be told they can't just put it back on i need an appointment, ok fine can i have an appointment NO! its not an emergency therefore need to wait a week. I don't have enough steroids therefore am told unhelpfully have to wait till run out then ring at 8 on day as will be an emergency what a totally stupid response....so tried at 8am today to get appointment and by 8:04 all appointments gone so now have a sit and wait appoinment at 11am with all the infectious ill people.

WHole thing totally frustrating.

rant over!!

Hi Marmite

Feel that you have been treated rather appalling, generally my own practise has been pretty good, but because I had a long list of meds found regularly that receptionists made mistakes when I ordered repeat prescriptions. I sorted out my own difficulties by one making an appointment to discuss my difficulties with the practise manager and then between us we decided to have a batch prescription system set up. Hope your own issues get sorted .

Poor Marmite, I hope you are not currently picking up some nasty. Find if your GP has a PA I find mine very easy to contact and she normally sorts things out straight away. My new GP who is still slightly scared I am going to come in and say either my tummy is trouble or I have a bad chest is very sweet and after literally falling into the chair told me that people a lot less sick have home visits, that is as maybe but so long as I can crawl to the Dr's I will, home visits are for the really ill!

As a GP....utterly ridiculous. If I ""clean up"" someone's repeat list, I will only remove stuff that a) hasn't been ordered for >12-18 months (hayfever meds excepted) or b) we have been told to stop by hospital docs, usually by referencing latest clinic or discharge letter.

Can you have a call back from your GP to sort this out, rather than having to wait to be seen in person?

Marmite,

That is appalling! they are in effect deniying you life saving meds! Eg the steroids & the nebs and then putting you at risk of catching bugs in a waiting room just to sort out someone else's mess up! My GPs are very good most of the time, though there was a request a few weeks ago to see the GP about being on both Seretide & Flixotide etc. I made the app anyway though by the time I got there I had a list of other things to ask so it wasn't quite wasted. The GP had sorted the Sere & flix problem anyway!

I would have thought a clean up like that should only happen at a 6 monthy review!

Though My GP just signs it off as reviewed without seeing me anyway. And leaves all in place. I do tell them if I don't need something and then they remove it.

I hope you get it sorted.... you seem to have a bad batch of health providers where you live!

It makes me thankful that my GP is so good, some of the stuff on my script must make him do a double take I have sub cut terbutaline and cyclazine running all the time (not together obviously) and I need water for injection to dilute the cyclazine, he is fabulous and getting it all sorted. I tend to go in if there are any major changes taking a box of what ever it is with me so we get the right thing (it took months to sort out 5ml phials of terbutaline). I almost feel like I should send him a hug.

Wow, I thought my GP was bad, but that is appalling, he shouldn't remove meds without a review really, and why such a wait to see him, I thought there was some sort of government time limits off a day or two. If I phone early i can get an appointment that day with my GP, and thats how it should be.

BEX, your lucky to be able to have home visits, my practice stopped doing those over 10 years ago, and will not ever make the effort to come out, you have to get there or too bad.

I have seen dr, had all meds put back on and had all explained.

Two reasons one my normal named Gp has left and two because i have been admitted regularly recently have had meds topped up on discharge so weren't seen as needed according to computer system so when discharge letter added drugs changed and not all my drugs were listed on discharge letter.

Have also had need for asthma nurse review removed as have 2 resp consultants and they have agreed not to just change drugs again, although the practice manager said that the last time when they tried to switch me to seretide from flixotide and serevent without seeing me!

So repeat is sorted script been got from pharmacy, hopefully didn't catch anything from the miserabe masses and now if only someone could prescibe an attitude adjustment and a dose of helpfulness to the dragons sorry receptionists (don't jump on me i used to be one!) all would be well in the world!

gp

Why do gp's think they know your asthma better than we do? Mine is just as bad I went in the other week there and had a review of asthma drugs and to see have the diet was going. I was not pleasent to him as when asking about diet I said I couldn't live off half an apple slice of ham and a slice of bread for the rest of my life as I like food his reply was ""yes it looks like"". What he doesnt take in to account is the steriods and the fact i have lost to date 18 stone, I mean what more does he want.

Marmite

In brief, my Pred disappeared off my script at one odd point earlier this year-made an appt to get some urgently, and was told it will self remove automatically after 6 months as it is a 'controlled' drug.

So that's one way of ensuring I do turn up for my 6 monthly prescription check.

I tend to have the opposite-GP couldn't give me single extra items as I am written up for 2 of everything a month and she couldn't overwrite it even though I was asking for emergency top ups so I didn't run out when abroad! Ended up with a whole cupboard of duplicates when I only wanted one more Seretide! This also seems ridiculous.

Sus

just got repeat meds from chemist and noticed only got one sharpsbin which will last about a week if lucky with 12mg sc bricanyl a day, thought it was an oversight at the chemist until looked at repeat prescription and for some unknown reason my gp has changed my monthly repeat from two to one 1 litre sharpsguard (why do they keep changing the name, its always the same one!!!). It took me ages to get him to give me two which dont last the month anyway. I done need this aggrivation especially in this weather!

Rant over, thanks for reading!!! Hope its a bit cooler werever you are. Hugs and nebs to allX

What doctors and consultants don't seem to realise is that when they stress us out with their bad care is that our blood pressure rises, our anxiety increased and we eat ourselves out of house and home because we are so agitated and upset. Then when we are having an exacerbatrion we get told "you must be worrying" . Give us a break doctors - our condition is serious and we need to be calm to get through the day.
