my asthma took a turn for worst on 21st sept and landed me in hosp till today 30th sept when i was allowed home hense me coming on here.

I was rushed in to hospital with near fatal asthma attack, straight in to resus first time in my life very frighthening, they got me straight on nebs and IV (also first time on IV salbutomol, atrovent, hydrochloride, magnesium and predisolone)

I was admitted to a ward once i was kind of stablised from what i came in as from there the doctors started playing with my medication. They have discovered once again as has been found with me in the past the aerosol or MDI inhalers there other name i think) just irrate my chest even more, is this common? does anyone else find this? So they took me off these inhalers completely and put me on Salbutomol nebules 5mg four times a day and PRN, Seretide accuhaler 500 2 puffs twice a day, singulair 10mg once a day and predisolone 30mg. This is what the consultant has just sent me home on. I have no doubts on this consultant he was really good and he was very supportive of me and understanding and i am now under a resp nurse and him which i will see both and have phone contact for both. If i have an attack that a neb doesnt sort i have to go to a and e.

This is quite all new to me i never realised asthma could get like this and i was wondering what people on here thought and such like. It has come as quite a shock and the consultant says that if i have another attack that it could be fatal or life threating if i dont get to hospital. I am apparently at the top of the step wise ladder with my medication so they cannot give me anything else for at home, i didnt know if this was true or not but considering i cant have MDI or aerosol inhalers i am guessing it must be. any one any ideas if that is correct or not?

Before i went in to hospital i had just found the forum and it was great as i found a lot of support from it. And i thank you all very much for this and hope i continue to find this support from it.

Look forward to any replies or posts

Hi Plumie,

Hope you are feeling better....A very similar thing happened to me in the instance that I thought my asthma was just mild but poorly controlled, but 2 weeks ago I ended up in hospital for a while and came out with brittle asthma, salbutamol nebs, symbicort, pred and singulair...Never had home nebs before and never really thought that I would need them ( but the countless times I have ended up at the docs and been put on a neb there and then I, and they are kinda glad I wasgiven one). It came as a shock to me too so I kind of know where you are coming from, it is a shock but its also quite scarey too.

Take care and get better soon

pls feel free to pm

Sam x
