Hello I need help! Has anyone moved over to the CFC free preventer inhalers yet? I met with the Asthma nurse and I wasnt sure if to go for Qvar MDI or Clenil Modulite. I've read some articles on Qvar which say the particles are smaller and go lower into your lungs, hence you need to take less, has anyone tired either of these?
I tried that Qvar one once as a trial i got from my doctor it was weird i only used it once. I use flovent as my preventer inhaler i don't know the name in UK it's an orange inhaler and its CFA free, i have been using for many years. It is the main inhaler perscribed here along with ventolin for most patients with mild to moderate asthma which is the majority.
Qvar's particles are much finer and therefore considered to be more efficient. That means you half the dose of becotide that you were on. Clenil has similar size particles to Becotide so the dose stays the same as becotide. I tried Qvar but reacted to the propellant but no a lot of people that are much better on it. I now use Clenil and it seems to work even better than the becloforte that I was on. they both feel strange when they hit the back of your throat at first but you do get used to the different propellant in them. I had to force myself not to cough when I first =strarted to take Clenil, that was never a problem when I started on the becotide/becloforte group.
Hope that is of some help to you Matt.
Ange
For reference, Flovent contains fluticasone - the UK equivalent is Flixotide.
The Flixotide aerosol inhaler is NOT CFC-free, but Flixotide is also available in dry powder inhalers.
Flixotide is CFC free in aerosol version! It is the Flixotide Evohaler.
It was becotide MDI that became extinct I think because it still had CFCs in and A&H didn't make it CFC free.
I think All preventers and relievers are now CFC free.

Well as far as i know flovent is CFC free, it says on their website.
You're right, Kate. That'll teach me not to use a printed copy of the BNF and stick to their website instead!
And yes, Flovent is certainly CFC-free - we don't get that brand over here though, so my Flixotide comments didn't apply to it.
What doesn't help matters is that Flovent is made by GSK, and Flixotide is made by Allen & Hanbury - who are owned by GSK! So I've no idea why it should have a different name in North America - especially as the name ""Flovent"" is shared with that of a computer mainframe cooling system!
Yes, Steve, my printed copies are at best 18 months out of date, m'dear....
But I use the on line one now for checking things.
Yes, so do I Kate - the ones at home are my relics from my house-officer era....
Thanks everyone for your replies. I've been prescribed Clenil Modulite and will see how I get on. I've tired the autohalers for a while but found i couldnt pull enough air through them when i was bad, so will have to stick with an MDI.
