SPINAL with SEDATION

Hi everyone.,

I am due to have aTHR under spinal. Could those of you who have gone through this help me please.

I would like to only have LIGHT sedation but I truly do not want to know what is going on. What was it REALLY like, how much were you aware of. Would you recommend this or would you go for deeper another time?

Love you all on this site. Get answers no one else can give me. Thank you.

Hi. I had a THR last November under spinal and light sedation. I was very nervous to say the least but I had told the anaesthetic when he visited on the ward that I didn’t want to be aware of what was going on. He was very reassuring. I had the spinal and was laid down and can honestly say I knew nothing more until I was in the recovery room ! I am now waiting to go on the list for my other hip and will opt for the same spinal and light sedation combo. Wishing you well with the op and your recovery 😊

Thank you. Wanted to hear real experiences. Did they give you earphones or anything. Just do not want to be right out of it, sleep sounds lovely.

Go for it! I wasn't aware I was any different, lay on the table, told to roll on my side. Next thing I knew someone said to wake up!! Obviously slept through it all. No groggy after effects either. Brilliant! Having my hip done changed me from a two sticks cripple to a hill walker again! I do about four miles every day with my dog as well. Not bad for an eighty year old woman.

Best of luck

Thank you so much. Did they give you earphones or anything, or did you just fall asleep. I am 79 so lovely to hear from someone else my age.

No, no earphones or anything. Just a relaxed feeling and I wasn't aware of feeling sleepy. They got me up and walking on a frame the next morning and home the next day. No driving for six weeks but no pain.

Could I please ask you a personal question, do not reply if you do not want to, but being the same age as me do you have any other issues , are you on any medications etc., because of mine I have been assessed as higher than an 80year old without other problems but not unduly high. I am terrified of having the op but know it is the only way to go. So lovely to talk to you. Tnak you.

Yes unfortunately. I now have stage three kidney disease caused by taking the Ibuprofen the doctor told me to take to ease the pain from my hip!!! Therefore I am on Lisinipril and Lansoprasole which give a bit of a cough but nothing serious.Don't be scared of the op. You won't know anything about it till it is over and the pain has gone. Well worth it! And you will manage later. I live on my own and managed with no one coming to see me. Our generation cope!!

Thank you. I am Diabetic, have Atrial Fibrillation and high blood pressure. On LOADS of pills. Must trust the consultant when he says if I was too high a risk he would not have put me on the list. Just looking for extra reassurance I suppose. Thank you for giving me that. I am lucky in that I still have a husband to support me although he is waiting to go into hospital again for more treatment for Melanoma cancer in his leg which he has had for 16 years, worst senario we could be in different hospitals at the same time! Both with dodgy legs! But as you say we will get through, it is what we have always had to do. Lovely, lovely, lovely to talk to you. Thank-you.

Have developed Stage CKD3a. Due to being on Ace Inhibitor(Perindopril) for nearly 20 yrs. Every week I make up a drink of fresh Barley water, drain off the water & put the cooked barley into soups whatever. Home made Barley water cleanses the kidneys. My mother made this for me after contracting Scarlet fever, during the War. Also limit your Caffeine each day. Plus no alcohol. All boring, I know, but it works. My Glomular Filtration Rate is now up to 52 from 45. If your GFR is below 60, you have the beginning of Chronic Kidney Disease (GFR). I’m 87 in 2 months, but try to keep mobile. Yes, our generation are pretty good, I believe due to No sweets, & rationing. Plus we had to walk to school, 2 miles each way or a bus. Plus all this with bombing ( I lived in London). I frequently wonder what our grandchildren & gt. Grandchildren will be like at our age. We are a fantastic generation. Keep Calm & Carry On.

I had this for my THR it was brill slept through it all & recovery is fine in that you wake up like from a sleep. Practise your exercises now before you go in, brain & body get it & easier to do then.

All the best. 🤗

Thank you. I do try to do my exercises and will continue to do so, hearing of your experience has been very helpful.
