Hi everyone,is there anyone else out there who is suffering from or has suffered from scar tissue problems after their knee replacement. I've a fantastic range of movement and my walking is excellent but I'm suffering intense pain in the front of my knee both ascending and descending the stairs.(worse than before my op !) Would I benefit from massage therapy ??Thanks in anticipation.

This link may help (scroll down to find things you can do at home to help the scar tissue). It’s a US site but you may be able to find similar advice from a UK based site if you search online -
Thank you so much for your speedy response, the article is very informative ,I'm going to try the massage suggested, I've been having additional physio but that's been pretty useless as my range of movement etc is excellent and it hasn't really had any effect on the problem. I see the consultant again almost a year to the day since my op in November so if it's no better then hopefully he will have some constructive ideas to offer.I really appreciate the advice you've given me over the year since my operation,it's much appreciated. Thanks for your time.J.
You’re welcome - at the moment I’m getting physio following shoulder replacement last year (just pre Covid so no physio at the time).
All pain gone and mostly good movement, but occasionally if J get arm in wrong position just a few glitches…so finally decided I’d better get it sort - privately of course!!
Somehow one muscle doesn’t seem to have strengthened as well as others - so a few months of extra work!
That's great info. After I had thumb surgery I went to a physical therapist and she used different types of fabric to rub on the scar tissue. It started with a soft piece of fabric increasing with a rougher surface including a piece of leather (using the rough side).
Hi Judy,
Absolutely !
Get into massage therapy.
I had a right knee partial knee replacement in early November 2015 and as soon as my dressings were removed and the incision was assessed as clear of infection I went to a sports injury massage therapist and she went to work on my operated knee. Bloody brilliant.
She used an Aloe Vera Gel and massaged not just the incision line but all around and under the knee and this treatment went on for weeks. Best thing I ever did. The idea behind massage therapy is to prevent scar tissue forming. She showed me what to do and how to do it myself at home to supplement what she did.
Sometimes, YouTube has short videos showing this practice you could try and type in the Youtube search box knee surgery/ preventing scar tissue .... something like that.
Thanks so much for your reply,I'm thinking that I should have been advised about massage much sooner,I'm really disappointed because as I say my range of movement is excellent and this only started 5 months after surgery. One of the local physios (not hospital based) has a sports injury massage clinic,I think I'll give them a ring. Thanks again for your advice.Judith
No worries Judith. Glad that my experience can be of some use. Don't give up, if you can manage it and subject to the advice of your clinician do try the massage route.
