Hi there, just found this app and trying it out. I have osteoarthritis, and had a hip replacement last weekend. I’m doing the usual things; starting walking, stretching exercises. Any great ideas/tips welcome, especially on sleeping as not getting much of it!

Total hip replacement
Hiya David61,
Haven't had the hip replacement but have had the slightly more challenging knee replacement.
What I found was that it was vital to keep up the pain relief 24/7 even to the point of being like a zombie. If you don't do the pain relief it makes exercises and stretches that much harder. Sleep .... hmmm ! just slept as and when I could, don't sweat over the lack of ....... it'll only drive you insane.
Have a look on YouTube in the search box..........." exercises following hip replacement", you might pick up some clues from there.
good luck,
John
Hi John
Thanks for the thoughts. Strangely needing very little pain relief but the thing I’m struggling with most is sleep. Probably need to stop using tablets as they give me at least 3-4 hours and take to sleeping when I can; even during the day which is usually a big no no.
Will take a look at You Tube.
Cheers
David
Hello David
Had my second hip replacement in September and my advice is take it slowly it's very early days
I'm now fully recovered and doing everything I could before I started to get the pain and walking around 8-10 miles a week
It will be difficult to sleep for a while and I found it hard to sleep on my back but it soon passes and every week you will see an improvement
Just take good care of yourself
Wishing you all the best in your recovery
Slowly & safely one day at a time doing what is advised by your orthopeadic team.
Hi David, I had a total hip replacement in the 4th Feb so we’re in the same boat!
Rheumatoid does hinder things as the trauma of the operation can cause flares....ouch!
Sleeping........ a friend loaned me a pregnancy pillow, it’s horse shoe shaped and fits round me in bed, it stops me rolling , keeps me warm and supports your body. I’ve found it really help me sleep. That and 30mg codeine at night, I don’t take it during the day.
Try and rest but stay awake in the daytime and please keep us updated. It’s so good to hear from someone on the same journey! Best wishes. Lesley
Hi Lesley
Thanks for the feedback, and really helpful. I might try and get hold of a pillow like that; and the idea of codeine a good one. I have tried to stay away from it as severely bunged me up, but perhaps just once during a day.
Staying awake during the day, reading, playing the piano and watching a bit of crap TV passing the time. Likewise, really helpful to know you are not on your own. Take care and will let you know how it goes and likewise the other way David
Hi Cat33, good advice, and the time factor a big one as well as any immediate interventions. Might try codeine but good to be reminded day by day, week by week, it slowly improves.
You too and thanks
David
