What can I do to alleviate severe back pain?

Hi everyone.

Several years ago I had an MRI after my first hip replacement when my other hip started hurting. Apparently it was referred pain from my back. It settled down for a few years and then I had the other hip replaced and another MRI. Like the first it showed squished discs, scoliosis, atrophied muscles. I went back to the gym and aqua aerobics at the first opportunity.

A few months ago I suspended my gym membership whilst I had carpal tunnel surgery in both hands.

I walk my dog every day for about an hour in the forest.

That’s my background.

Two weeks ago I thought I must have overdone things working in my garden, because my lower back started hurting. The muscle on the right side would spasm, but with a bit of determination the pain would subside when I managed to straighten up. The pain has become excruciating and now I have found that hanging from a door frame by my finger tips....this takes a while to achieve....and forcing my heels to the floor gives a few minutes relief.

I take paracetamol. I am trying cold patches and neurofen patches. I got sciatica in my right leg. Both legs ache like crazy in the morning and when I wake in the night.

I saw the Practice Nurse in the week and asked if it was time I got a steroid jab, but she said that I shouldn’t start those and she showed me a couple of gentle exercises.

What should I do? What can I try? Please.
