PP and Hypnobirthing

Hi I did Hypnobirthing with my first child but I was told that you can not be hypnotised once you've had PP.

I was just wondering does anyone know if that includes using Hypnobirthing for a following pregnancy?

I am sure breathing and tens will be fine it's just the tapes that you listen to prior to the birth I am not sure about....

Thank you

I’m not sure I’ve heard that about being hypnotised after ppp. Is hypnobirthing actually being hypnotised? Are there any professionals you could ask about it?

If you had it with your first could you ask who you did hypnobirthing with?

Good luck

Hi I'm not sure which professional would know ...I will see if I can seek out advice from the lady that did the course but as PP is so rare not many people get given training on it.

The tapes you listen to are meant to go into your subconscious so I guess work in a similar way to hypnosis...I will keep searching for an answer. Thanks

Hi Jlou84,

Congratulations on your pregnancy. It must be an exciting but also nervous time having experienced pp before. I have 2 children and had pp after my first, thankfully it did not repeat with my second baby.

I did not do hypnobirthing with either of my births, so I don't have experience of it that I can share. But doing a bit of googling I came accross Jessica Pidlsey an actor and writer who had pp after the birth of her son and is a hypnobirthing advocate. She also went on to have another baby some years after. She is on social media and here is a link to an interview/podcast with her:

Hope you do get some answers to your questions. In my experience it was very helpful to give a lot of thought to my various birth options and come up with a good plan for it. Take good care and all the best

Thank you that's really interesting I will look into her profile. I am not pregnant now, recently had a miscarriage but am hoping to get pregnant again and want to look into my options.

The potential pregnancy and birth do scare me so I am trying to prepare myself in the event it happens.

Hi Jlou84,

I am so sorry to hear about your miscarriage and I am sorry for having been so presumptuous.

I think it is totally understandable to feel a bit scared about the pregnancy and birth. I think you are in the UK, in which case you are more than likely to be under a perinatal mental health team through your pregnancy and for the first 2 years of your baby's life. You can also be referred for preconception counselling with a perinatal psychiatrist through your GP.

Let me know if you have questions or anything I can do to help, all the best in the future

Hello Jlou84,

Thank you for posting, this is an interesting question.

I had a little look to see if I could find anything helpful online last night. I did find some information on one online hypnobirthing course that had in the terms and conditions that it hadn’t been approved as being recommended for people with a previous history of psychosis, but I can’t seem to find the same information now… I do wonder if hypnobirthing is a bit different to being hypnotized as it uses self-hypnosis techniques and you retain the control, but that is just a thought. I think it is a good idea to seek advice from the lady who ran your previous course, and hopefully others here may have experience or knowledge to share.

I’m so sorry to read you have recently had a miscarriage. Sending you very best wishes for your future planning.

Best wishes,

Jenny x

Hi Jlou84, as you say it’s breathing techniques (much like meditation) to help you relax so not like someone is hypnotising you, more you get yourself into a relaxed state and use positive affirmations. That was my experience of hypnobirthing anyway I did a 5 day course and found it pretty useful at the birth to try stay relaxed. I haven’t heard anything about not being hypnotised after having had ppp. I had Ppp after my twins but would say I would practice hypnobirthing again. I would not let anyone hypnotise me though! Although I wouldn’t before ppp so more personal choice. I cannot seem any harm in hypnobirthing maybe could ask doc / midwife in any prep meetings. There is aa woman on YouTube called Nisa the Hypnobirthing midwife she she has some good free videos. Sending lots of love. Xx

Hey!

I’ve just had my third baby, after having two episodes of PP after the birth of my first two. I did a full hypnobirthing course, with a specialist doula, which was a game changer in terms of my birth and beyond. I’m fact, I haven’t become unwell this time, so from my personal experience, I can’t recommend hypnobirthing enough. Hynobirthing is not a form of hypnosis anyway, so I’m sure it will be fine. Good luck 😊xxx

Fascinating, I've never heard that you can't be hypnotised after PP. I did hypnobirthing both times, after having PP following birth of my first child.

The second time I used a track especially for women who've had a c section before as I knew I wouldn't be able to accept the messages of the standard one a second time after the first birth had not gone to plan.

I found that hypnobirthing really helped me to stay calm and in the right headspace during labour however I suppose I found that in my second pregnancy I was very anxious in the final trimester until it was all over. I did feel it doesn't really matter how much Hypno pbirthing I did or didn't do, it's actually pretty rational and very understandable to be anxious near the end, but I at least felt well prepared and trusted that although I didn't know what was going to happen that I would be able to get through it in the long run.

I'm sorry to hear you've had a miscarriage. It's really good you're reaching out for support, i think it can make such a difference to feel part of a community of people who understand where you're coming from. And for me knowing what to expect and how to help yourself stay well really helped my second pregnancy be a lot smoother.

Best wishes
