Mindfulness is essentially where you seek to focus upon the moment - to be mindful of the task in hand, whether that be having a shower or washing up or eating a sandwich. It tries to have us to stay in the present moment and to be mindful (thinking about and aware of) of the present sensations. The aim is to stop our minds racing ahead to what we should be doing in 30mins, or what we should have done an hour ago or yesterday. It also aims to get us to be non-judgemental about how we feel, and instead just to acknowledge these feelings and then to let it pass.

Although it sounds so very diffciult to do, it is worth looking up John Kabat Zinn in google - and there is a book worth reading -

The Mindful Way Through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness

There are a lot of sites for mindfulness Be careful though you need to ensure that it is a good course ( should last 8 weeks or 8 lessons)Look on the Mind site there is an online version

I have heard of it, and tried it. I found it very upsetting as it sent my mind racing round and round in circles. However this is probably because I tried it by myself and I think if you have issues with anxiety/obsession (as I do) it is better to do in in a class given by an experienced practitioner.

Hi mimisings, yes I was suggested it by my therapist, coincidentially have recently written a blog about my experiences with it, i guess it's different for everyone depending on their circumstances. I've used Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness for beginners cd as a guide: theanxietytracker.blogspot....

hello ive just read your blog - i too have foud it helpful to write things down - it has helped me get more of a handle on anxiety, and ive suffered with it long enoug to have it as my uncomfortable friend rather than ruling my life, although many years ago it did, but life has a way of dragging you along kicking and screaming anyway, so you may as well try to tolerate the anxiety and include some nice bits in your life for you, like goig down the pub with yer mates, family, freinds, writing a blog!

Hi Mimisings...I've done mindfullness :) Feel free to ask me any questions about it that you may have. I try to practice it a lot because as you know when you're anxious the last thing you feel able to do is try and relax. I actually saw a therapist briefly when I was in a day-unit who told me to practice it when doing daily tasks if I found it hard to sit down and let the thoughts pass me by.

Erm...an example of this is, and it's what works for me, when I am in the throws of anxiety I feel like I am almost trapped and can't do anything about it. I end up glued to the spot whether it's in bed, on the sofa...wherever. To even get up and pour myself some water is massive. So I try to summon all my energy and take the dog to the local park. I find that this type of exercise helps to burn off the adrenaline faster. Whilst I am walking I try to immerse myself in what's around me. First I concentrate on the shade of green the leaves are in the trees...when my mind wanders I just refocus...but not beat myself up about it. I listen to the sound the ground makes as I walk on it and the way it feels. Sometimes I sit down on the grass and feel it between my fingers as I take deep breaths (this is a grounding technique).

Mindfullness is hard and I can only be mindful for a minute or two at a time but it helps to lower my heartrate and adrenaline. I also try to practice it when I am not anxious as it's much easier then. Everyone I have spoken to says its all about practice.

I even know someone who does mindful cooking! lol check out anxietyslayer.com
