No need to do Yoga to relax. Induce the REM healing state anytime by doing this:
Sit in a comfortable chair. Then begin moving your forefinger in a slow, rhythmic, circle, while breathing slowly and deeply. You will start to feel your whole body relaxing. After a short time you will notice that you are very calm and peaceful, yet alert, and that your mind is no longer busy with thoughts.
The REM state is a natural part of sleep in which tensions are released. Once you catch on to bringing about this state you will be able to do it without the use of your fingers, just by controlled breathing.
Try this out for a while and see if it helps.

R.E.M. Sleep is a sleep state and not a state of being awake. As the initials tell you, anyone watching you will know you are in it because of the rapid movements of your eyes. You will not know as you will be asleep!!!!!!!
Why can't there be an awake state that's got the same healing properties as REM? That's what people doing YOGA are after. I believe that REM, hypnosis, mantras, and so on are all pursuing a state which promotes healing, brings calmness, and is relaxing. When people are being hypnotized they are always told that they feel very relaxed.
I was almost hypnotized by someone without my consent. He just started repeating a phrase I had just used. I felt myself being pulled into a trance-like, calm state. I think anyone can do this for themselves. That's why I recommended moving the hand and forefinger in a slow circular motion while breathing deeply and slowly. When I do this, I become very calm, free from anxiety and so on.
laruecharles, I had gone to a hypnotherapist for 6 months. I now am able to use self hypnosis successfully to calm both my mind and my body. I always do meditation and deep breathing. Imagery is another form of escaping into a relaxed state. You Tube has so many videos that are geared to those suffering from anxiety. Some as short as 1-10 minutes and others that can lull you to sleep and keep you asleep for 8 hours.
It's all about finding whatever works for you. I can see how moving the hand and forefinger in a slow circular motion can help. It's not how we get there but the end results of reaching our goal. xx
