But I've read studies escitalopram has less side effects. Are either hard to come off .

Hi Chi1504, After having been left on Benzos for many years, they no longer worked.

I was safely weaned off my Xanax and placed on Lexapro. For me it has been the best

drug I could have asked for. No lethargy, feel clear headed, motivated but not hyper.

But that doesn't mean it might be the best drug for you. We are all different in our

response to any meds. That's not bad or good. It's all about finding what works for

you and who better to know that then your own doctor who knows your health history.

Medications don't usually take into account the age of the person but rather the

dosage that is right for that patient. Once you decide to take your medicine, it's

about believing that it will work for you. Give it time 4-6 weeks on most SSRIs.

Work closely with your doctor regarding any side effects so that you don't stop

short of taking them and miss out on the benefits. Good luck :) xx

As Agora said each person responds differently to each medication or other treatment. I had success with Celexa(citalopram) for several years after Prozac stopped working after about 10 years(I started Prozac shortly after it came out late 80's). Celexa eventually stopped working as well. I had no major side effects from it; never had emotional blunting or weight gain. After Celexa it was trial and error with many other meds or combinations of meds. One of the last ones I was tried on was Lexapro(escitalopram) , which did nothing for me. At that point I had became treatment resistant to meds. I am presently depression free after having TMS. I do take an occasional Ativan for anxiety but not on a regular basis. BTW, I am in my late 60's. Was never on HRT. Hope you find what works best for you!!

Supposedly, escitalopram has fewer side effects, but it is VERY personal and truly varies. I am currently going off of it because at a high enough dose to work, it made me feel like a zombie. But many folks have NO problems. It seems to be helping my husband at a higher dose than what I was on - and he has had no side effects. I would go with what your doctor recommends, give it a month to six weeks and see how you feel. If the side effects are too bad or don't get better, ask to try something else. We are in our 50s, BTW.
