Dealing with anxiety and impulsivity.

Hi!

I am struggling dealing with my anxiety when I try to control it.

My anxiety comes when I am in a stressful situation. I am trying to relax and doing some deep breaths or trying to distract my mind, but when I am in that process I have impulsive thoughts about what I want to do, so I refrain myself of doing anything stupid.

I never was an impulsive person so it is very difficult to deal with it while I am trying to control my anxiety too.

In that moments I feel anger and I do not think clearly. Then I force myself to be patient, but then I start to feel headache and some kind of pressure in my chest.

I do not how to deal with that.

I have a lot of anxiety and also impulsive which has caused me problems with chest pain and overeating. I had to go on medication but it took some time to get my medication right for me. I would encourage you to see a psychiatrist who will help you. It may take a few tries ( I went to three doctors) until I found the right medication but now I’m pretty stable. Hope this helps

Oo!I am right now on medication for anxiety and depression.

My therapist told me that I need to use the technics she show me when I get anxious, but I noticed that I can not do it because I get to frustrated and angry as I explained before.

I just realized why I can never relax in that stressful moment.

Well.

Hi UkyoCoanccy, I would recommend practicing the techniques your therapist taught you when you are feeling calm to make it a habit & easier to do when you’re upset.

Hi. Have you ever read The Body keeps the Score? I forgot who wrote the book yet its good. Also there are good books and videos on YouTube and psych2go to help with anxiety impulsivity and others issues. Also have you considered talking with a therapist? There are also crisis lines and warm helplines. Hope this helps.

I like to look for 5 things that are blue repeatedly, I know there’s a more this mindfulness exercise and includes the 5 senses. Usually the 5 blue things or pink thins or I change the color up, doing this helps when I feel the anxiety arise. A guided meditation is also very helpful or sometimes I listen to rainfall/storm sounds/ music

I understand only too well the circle we spin as we spiral through an anxiety filled day.Firstly you have to realise your feedback system behaves involuntary just as your breathing and heartrate should.Its only when we try to control the feelings do we lose control.Muscles become tense as we pump more adrenaline out...headaches ..as we pump noradrenaline...and any other pathway fed by the sympathetic nervous system...digestive, bowel, breathing, heartrate, increased awareness all happen as our brain perceives a threat.This is why even having a bad dream will cause you to sweat and feel in danger...the brain does NOT know the difference between real and imagined.

You can learn not to respond to the symptoms of anxiety , sure they are there but they will not harm you.They are an inconvenience, and once you realise that it is your autonomic nervous system that is over alert...you can start to address it...Baby steps at first ...just by avoiding stimulants like coffee and noise, violent films, arguements...replace those with anything that makes you feel calm.People say relax...take deep breaths..but you need to make it part of your daily routine...at least 15 minutes twice a day.

I urge you to read "Self Help for your nerves" by the Australian pyschologist Dr Claire Weekes...The book is very cheap and available on Amazon/Ebay.It turned my life around within a month 40 years ago.

Practice the exercises...start to enjoy... the feelings you get when you relax...that way you can take them into stressful situations and cope without actually losing control.Vagus nerve excercises also help restore vagus tone which balances the tug of war going on within...things you can't pinpoint yet feel.So please believe you can regain control and get some normality back.

People who have underlying anxiety states are much more in tune with their thoughts and feelings...thats why those that are not...find it hard to understand.

When I get that way, I try to disconnect from issue and go for walk or call a friend or deep breath’s usually help.
