Nothing wrong with taking a xanax or diazepam from time to time if you're beginning to feel panicky. But there are other ways to calm frazzled nerves worth knowing about. People use them all the time but maybe some newbies haven't heard about them so worth mentioning.

Controlled breathing can release natural tranquillising hormones to calm you down. It's simple and you can do it in a crowded room without anybody noticing. First, breathe in slowly through your nose while you count to five. Fill your lungs and then hold it for five. Then slowly breathe out through pursed lips also to the count of five. Pause for a few seconds and then slowly repeat. And repeat. And repeat.

It's hard to feel panicky if you're totally relaxed. So sit as comfortably as you can and imagine every muscle in your body becoming completely lifeless and relaxed. Start with your jaw muscles, let your jaw open slightly. Then move on to your arms and your hands, imagine them becoming drained of all strength. Next your chest muscles, feel the tension flowing away, followed by your abdomen and finally your legs. Feel your legs growing limp. Finally, imagine there's a big muscle where your brain is and feel that relaxing completely too. Now your whole body is working as one feeling lifeless, relaxed and devoid of muscular tension. Let the waves of anxiety come, offer no resistance. Let them engulf you as the sea crashes against a rock on the shore and rushes past. The rock endures. You are that rock.

Give it a try, it could see you through a tricky period.

We are allowed to have intrusive thoughts, they are exaggerated responses to things we are concerned about or we fear caused by the sensitised nature of our nervous system.

When our nerves recover the obsessive intrusive thoughts will resolve.

Best to accept those thoughts for the time being knowing they cannot harm us and are caused by blips in our nervous system, just accept them for the moment without fear and carry on as normal.
