Mornin' Hope4321. I actually got flustered and a bit frazzled yesterday and had to talk to several of my friends on this site. I try to be strong for everyone else but, asked the question, 'Who's gonna be strong for me?' A bunch of my friends responded right away. We sure are stronger together. I just told So17, that her and I working together and communicating constantly could handle her problems 10 times better than just her alone. Power to the people of ADAA!

in reply to JEG325

Hey JEG325 ! I hope you are feeling better today than yesterday?

Yes you are right!

Take care x

Yeah, I slept well and enjoyed a good, peaceful breakfast. I guess I was feeling a little sorry for myself. I told Starrlight this morning that I spend so much of my time helping other people to feel motivated and happy , that I forgot to ask who or what is gonna make me happy!

in reply to JEG325

Im glad to hear that . Youโ€™re so lovely of course youโ€™ll have so many here always there for you x donโ€™t worry ๐Ÿ˜Š

We all have them days x

You know you're right. I complained about not feeling quite right all day. I finally figured out why. I forgot to take 1 of my doses of vitamin D. I take 3, a total of 7,500iu's per day. For me, it's a strong anti-anxiety/depression blocker. Missing just one dose was frying my nerves and making me edgy and anxious. But, darned if someone didn't tell a bunch of my friends on here and I had a sudden wave of well wishers. It made me feel so good. Thanks to whoever did that for me. Hope, you are aready one of my favorites and I enjoy hearing from you at anytime. A kazillion waves of love and happiness for your well wishes.

oh....I'm living the dream of the money pit from hell...... the great thing about my partner and I is though....they originally built this house brick by brick so they do have some experience, and me being in construction most of my working life, it's a good team. Now if they could just remember where they laid the darn pipe originally that would make things a lot easier...

Wow thats so lucky for you both! At least you know what youโ€™re doing and what is best x perfect team!

Ah, plumbing! The bane of our existence! We either love it or hate it. I can guess your emotion right now. Builders and architects seem to draw exacting schematics for electrical wiring, but plumbing seem to be 'about here looks good.' Then the construction workers, bless their hearts, say, 'oops, nope, gotta go there.' The architect never gets around to revising the building plans. Six months later, no one has a clue!

I worked for a company in Sunnyvale who developed a moisture finder to find breaks in pipes, moisture under roofing, etc. Atmospheric Sciences, Inc., ASI. Maybe they have something that could help.

Remember when a 'ladies' gym had those vibrators that went around the waist to shake off fat? Well, if they worked, you'll be skinny in no time!

oh that's funny...yes.... Kellogg company had these health farms for a while....and they had all these gals lined up doing this....I think at best they got your dinner digested and your circulation going....

And yes... the scourge of the contractor were often the whimsy of the Architects.... I was in finishes...my company was in painting and decorticating, so I bid jobs off of blueprints mostly and there was always a wall or soffit getting moved around or a few doors being added here and there....or a hundred can lights being put up on our finished ceilings 12-14 feet up in the air....oh yes I remember them well...

My favorite was one who called for 'Geranium Pink' on all the walls in this very large restaurant.... it looked like a 'Barbie Dream House gone wrong' or someone threw up Pepto-Bismol all over the walls....so.... yes... it was a complete re-paint....3000 square feet of it.

When we were in business, we had a number of clients in the trades, and architects, designers, landscapers, etc. They all had a story where a client was adamant that something be a certain way, against all advice! Those were their 'Pepto-Bismol' moments. We had some great laughs in that business!

I once had a client who wanted me to make their entry pillars to a very very expensive home look like 'terra cotta'....yes....and part of my finishing business was that we did faux finishes...hence my screen name..... so I gave this very difficult client a number of sample tiles to choose from, and half way through the work the daughter comes home from college and says she wants veining through the finish like stone...I explained terra cotta was clay and not stone so there are no veins and she yelled at us to do what she wanted or else....the father got home and I asked him who was in charge of this job and he said we were to make everyone happy. I explained the issue and he threw his hands up and said ...'well...you should know what I want'....at that point I packed up the crew and told him that I was not a mind reader and that I would be back to finish the job when he made a decision, weeks went buy and I then told him I had a contract with him, and due to un-reasonable circumstances he re-niggled on the contractual agreement and I wanted a check for my time and materials, and he could get someone else to finish the job....then he wanted to negotiate price to finish again. He had Andy Worhols all over the house, lived in a multi-million dollar home and was trying to get yet more money off us. So.... I finished the terra cotta and ended up almost taking him to court to get full payment.

In our business experience we've encountered our share of like experiences. It seems the richer they are, the more they are willing to try to cheat you. We had several that 'knew' the terms of a contract didn't apply to them. Some will even threaten to sue if they don't get their way. Good for you standing up to the jerk. As we well know, money doesn't mean high class. There are thieves, liars and cheats at all income levels. I firmly believe there are some rich people who got that way by abusing those they hired.

fauxartist profile image
fauxartist in reply to NCAQuilter

my ex- brother in law is a prime example.... he's a multi-millionaire and got that way cheating, lying, and hustling his whole way to the top and is as mean as salt about money. In every graduation picture of my sisters kids, he is frowning because he knew he had to foot the bill.....haaaa!!!!!

When it comes to the rich, it was the "Nouveau riche" who were the jerks mostly, There is also old southern money....the really rich who do have class...all the way. Those were the one's I stuck with mostly over the years. Most of my work was commercial...with some custom residential and historical restoration.

I know about the Southern wealthy: I'm from them! The old rich of our country are generally giving, honest people. And they are quiet about it. They demand excellent service and are willing to pay for it. They know quality when they see it! And, they don't equate gold plating and glitter with quality!

The most trouble we had in our business was from the new rich. Maybe they are so afraid of losing what they have and returning to where they came from that they are willing to cheat to stay where they are. And, in my experience, they have such an empty hole in their souls, they are always striving to fill it, and money is their only answer. But, the more they have, the emptier they are. Sad!

I envy your ability to be a faux artist! I tried it several times, and really liked the results! To be able to make a living at it must be fantastic!

We have the old southern hospitality thing goin on in our family too....I came up poor, because I was left out of the loop so to speak. I made my own way in life without a nickel from anyone. There is old money in our crowd as well....and I learned at an early age that you treat everyone with the same respect. And that manners and class are everything when it comes to doing good business....as you may know the name....Warren Buffett..he's old school. And much of what we did for one of his companies over the years, was on 'their word and a handshake'. Remember those days when your word meant something, most of my clients that I kept close ties too were that way. We built on trust and integrity. And the rest, I was no fool...contracts, pre-lims, ins. and no BS.... if it wasn't signed..it didn't get done.

NCAQuilter in reply to fauxartist

We built our business on integrity and trust, too. And, it had to go both ways! Much of our work was without contract, because the work involved could not be calculated up front. We prepared taxes as a large part of our business. Our clients had to trust us to do their taxes right and charge a fair fee! We became one of the largest independent businesses based on that! Taxes were always timely, or we paid the penalty and interest. We only missed a deadline twice. Cash flow was too badly impacted to do it again!

Clients were only put on extension when they couldn't receive information from a third party in time. Because we set appointments via postcard by January 10th, we could space our work, so we didn't kill ourselves and could meet other deadlines, like for payroll taxes, sales taxes, estimated taxes. Our clients could call to change their appointment. We didn't take drop-in. All had to have an appointment. If we received papers by the 10th of April, taxes would be done by the 15th. Of course, that rule was our closely guarded secret, else everyone would wait until the 10th! On the 15th, we closed at 5 PM. Very rarely did we have to wait for a delivery. But, we were busy. Quarterly payroll taxes were due in 16 days!

We interviewed clients as they brought their paperwork to us so we'd be clear about their situation , and again when we delivered so we could discuss what could be done to minimize future tax liability. If there was a tax form, we prepared it. We worked with individuals, sole proprietors, partnerships, corporations. You would recognize some of the names of businesses we worked with before they went public.

We also did foreign taxes - Philippines, French, Canadian, Italian, Mexican, to name a few. Since we were not CPA's but Enrolled Agents, we could prepare taxes from any state. CPA's are only certified in the states they apply to. EA's are enrolled with the IRS, and are accepted in every state.

I'm bragging, because I loved what we did. And taxes were only one side of the business! Our daughter bought the business from us, and practices the same level of integrity we did. She is now working with clients we started our business with, in '81.

As usual, I'm windy, but I love to talk to other business owners. You stated in one of your posts that you 'message' with a group for politics, etc. Is it possible to do the same to discuss the issues uniquely faced by business owners with depression?

fauxartist profile image
fauxartist in reply to NCAQuilter

Sure....I only chat with my friends here in private message about politics and general family stuff so it's not in posts. Any time you wanna chat drop me a line. I had my own business for almost 30 years and did and saw a lot, it was in mostly Southern Calif. but I travelled a lot to do work too.
