Hi everyone , just joined this group , hope everyone is having a good day today . I am having problems with anxiety at the moment , and I am so pleased to have found this support group and to know I am not alone , and there is help out there . I am not on any meds at moment , but doctor has suggested I take propranolol . Has anyone any advise on this medication as I am a bit wary of taking it . Thank you

Hi bornagain47 and welcome to the support forum. My advice is always follow your doctor's advice regarding medications. He best knows your health history and what may work for you. Taking meds is always a little frightening for those of us with anxiety. The best we can do is believe in that what we are taking will work for you. Hearing other's experiences with meds will only put doubts in your mind because what works for one may not for another.

Finding the right medication and the right dose is sometimes a trial and error process. Take what you are prescribed with an open mind. Never reading the pamphlet inside or listening to other's failures. This is about you and your doctor deciding what is best for you.

Trust and believe that you may be one step away from getting some relief from your Anxiety. Having the bottle sit on the shelf is allowing you to stay stuck in a fearful position. When you are ready to take your med, let someone in your family know, write down the time and the dose of the med and continue on with your day.

I wish you well. It always helps in reducing your anxiety by starting to learn other methods in relaxing. Stay Positive. :) xx

Greetings—I just joined yesterday. Just wanted to extend a welcome & wishes for support. I’m on fluoxetine and buspirone myself but beginning to worry it’s not enough. I’ve never heard of propranolol. I am an advocate for medication with lots of research and educated doctors with regular therapy

Hi AmyMe , thank you for the warm welcome and support . Propranolol is used in UK for anxiety and blood pressure , it is a beta blocker . I don't know how long it has been on the market . Best wishes .

Hi born again, Which doctor prescribed the propranolol? As AmyMe said, it is a drug called a beta blocker that is used for blood pressure control or cardiac problems. It works by slowing your heart rate and it can/is used by people who, for example, have to perform to crowds and so in taking a beta blocker your heart rate won’t go up as your natural anxiety or just excitement can cause it to do. With your heart beating slowly, the problem of feeling anxious, feeling your heart beating faster cause more anxiety and so the cycle goes. I’m curious as to what type of md would give something this potentially extreme medication with real effects to your cardiac status before trying something else more mainstream. I’ve had it before for knowing I would be in a situation likely to cause anxiety and to control it for just that evening or event, not for regular use at all. I would suggest talking to your primary doc or if he/she gave it to you, do a bit of reading and ask questions- never fear questioning your healthcare providers decisions or recommendations or lack of either! It’s your right to understand what being done to help you and I’m thinking you didn’t leave knowing what you were taking and maybe side effects or other options- I like asking if this treatment/ drug didn’t exist or I didn’t want it, what would be an alternative and Why!!? Best of luck- M
