Chesty cough

Hi, have just returned from holiday and somehow contracted proverbial cough/cold which appears to be presently doing the rounds. Having AF (taking beta blockers, BP tabs, apixaban) am aware cannot use over the counter medicines. Apart from paracetamol, can anyone recommend alternatives please.

Commiserations, every time I have travelled in the last 2-3 years I returned with same. I have mitigated the symptoms with daily nasal/sinus rinse - I use the squeeze bottle type with the appropriate salt mix, regular steaming with a few drops of Olbas Oil. Drink plenty of warm fluids and rest - probably the most important factor for your body to recover. Just because you can continue with daily life doesn’t mean you should as your body needs rest in order to heal, put too much stress through activity and your body’s resources are stretched a little too thin. Inflammatory response from infections usually result in AF for me.

Hope you recover very soon.

I caught covid and tested positive three weeks after my flu and covid jabs. Despite moving into a spare room and isolating my wife caught it three days later. Only knew it was covid because my wife had just bought some test kits.

Me too and my husband- only knew we had it as tested positive after daughter who we’d seem the previous day had told us she had! But husband didn’t test positive till my day 10 and we both tested negative on my day 15- his 5! We reported our results on the app and both got messages saying we could go out on our day 4s which might explain how it spread! We didn’t go out until we tested negative.

I take 1000mg slow release vitamin C tablet, vitamin D3 and zinc to protect my immune system. Since having pneumonia a few years ago I've not had any chest infections. I did have Covid around June time but that was so mild it was over within 5 days.

Wow jeanjeanie, sounds a positive healthy combination....all 3 plus olbas oil suggested by CDreamer, added to my Holland and Barrett list. Thank u so much.

You can take otc meds, just need to be careful, so consult a pharmacist if you need to.

anyatall profile image
anyatall in reply toBuffafly

Oh right ? Sincere thanks for that Buffafly . I do feel more than happy with suggestions CDreamer and Jeanjeanie have made...more natural remedies me thinks, but will bear that in mind

BenHall1 profile image
BenHall1 in reply toanyatall

Quite agree with Buff ............ when in doubt I always ask the Pharmacist at my regular "Prescription Supply" Pharmacy. I even use Benylin Cough Mixture OTC products. Currently the " Chesty Cough" Non Drowsy species. I'm on most of the regular prescription meds for AF ( incl. Warfarin ) and it has no adverse impact at all.

anyatall in reply toBenHall1

Brilliant, that's good to know. Thank you BenHall1

CDreamer in reply toBenHall1

Most cough meds have been removed from pharmacies here, you should avoid you should avoid OTC medications that contain decongestants, which are usually indicated by a “D” on the packaging. You should also be careful of cold and flu medications that contain a combination of drugs, as these can have multiple effects on your body.

Also purchased Manuka honey to soothe prickly throat

I like my hot toddy - Lemon, ginger, honey, couple of cloves and hot water. Not really sure if it helps but it’s nice and it feels as though it helps!

Staffsgirl profile image

I also always check for myself online (with a reputable and reliable source of course) for contraindications. Pharmacists have been known to make errors in my experience!

Buttercup and Bronchostop are 2 that do not have decongestant etc in them. I have tried both but bronchostop I find the better. They also do lozenges. It does seem to smooth and are pleasant to take. I suffer badly with acid reflux and it does help with that kind of cough as well.

My go to home remedy is boiled water with honey, lemon with crushed garlic...stinky but soothing!!...I'm quite lucky and don't get coughs and colds too often. The only med I take for it is paracetamol to try to control any temperature if required. Hope you feel better soon xx

anyatall profile image
anyatall in reply toLarneybuds

Thank you for that tip of lemon and "garlic" with my honey ...this next to try . Good job I've moved beds to isolate haha. Honey starting to work a treat on throat , helped tremendously last night with darn cough too. Obviously still there but not as horrendous.

Larneybuds profile image

I love garlic but know not everyone deals with the odour of it lol. I believe it is a natural type of antibiotic and if I've got a cough or cold I don't hesitate in crushing a clove!...and the honey and lemon are soothing. Years ago I can remember a friend saying if they had colds as children their mum used to tape a crushed garlic clove to the souls of their feet at bed time!!!🤔. I would thing that resulted in smelly beds but not sure if it worked on the cold! Xx

Unless you have a very high temperature that is provoking afib taking Paracetamol is a bad idea. Raising temperature is the body's natural mechanism for killing off microbes and artificially lowering it will prolong the infection. Our ancestors instinctively or from observation knew this wrapping people up in several layers when they were ill to encourage sweating. They even had fever bonnets! Paracetamol also lowers glutathione production which is one of the body's major antioxidants . Honey ,lemon and ginger are much better remedies. Raw garlic is excellent for coughs . If chewing a whole clove is too much it can be chopped up and put into soup and salads.

Hi

But in older years we lost a lot of folks.

Feeling comfortable with the sniffles is top of the list including a good night's sleep.

I love the smell of methol.

Last flu and don't have a jab was August 23. And the sputim test showed a virus and pneumonia strain. Dr gave me 7 days Amozil.

I echo CDreamer

I use Sterimar Breathe Easy Daily. I buy it on Amazon. It's a purified sea water with minerals etc. The hospital gave me my first bottle a few weeks ago after a major nose bleed and I now LOVE it. I have stocked up. I shall rinse my nose daily going forward.

anyatall profile image

Now that's a happy sounding " going forward" reply FancyPants54 ... ... may all your nose rinses be successful. Reading all replies has certainly been an education, yours included. Thank you

Hi

And you have the VICKS stick up your nose which will clear your nose. Yes, the towel over a stainless stee bowl. Great.

Rest and chicken soup. Marvellous.

The problem is in the airways, and the only way to reach them is inhalation. Steam, menthol (Vick's), eucalyptus (Olbas) - all are more likely to relieve symptoms than any systemic medicines (many of which are not for us, anyway, and no cough medicine does anything whatsoever except taste pleasant. Honey, lemon and, if acceptable, some spirits can be calming). Paracetamol - taken regularly to allow good blood levels and for the course of the illness as needed - will work far better than it's given credit for.

Truly excess secretions can, if needed, be treated with rather strong drugs but very few need such a sledgehammer. A steroid inhaler is needed if asthma or COPD co-exist.

Hi

Get it tested through your sputum as Whooping cough is going around.

Codeine and paracetamol or just codeine. It may constipate you so nuts and seeds, dates, figs, are great.

Chicken noodle soup great and Vit C McCoys dark grapes boxed juice no additives is fab.

I hope you get over this before Christmas.

What a banger!

Hi

As we get old we develop experiences!!!!

And I am prone to learning about my and your body (via this Forum),.

Never do we want you to ' not recover'.

cherio JOY. 75. (NZ)

Hi! Did you try to take mullein leaf? It's very good for such symptoms, I always take it as a tea or in supplements to help my lungs to recover. I believe it will help you with this chesty cough. If you want you may read about different types of mullein and how to take it nutra-harmony.com/blogs/new... It's a great natural lung protector.
