I’ve had a persistent, dry and unproductive cough for a good while now. When the many bouts of coughing occur, they are uncontrollable and go on for at least a minute. They are exhausting. They are much worse at night so I am not sleeping well.
My cardio nurse suggested that I contact my GP as perindopril (ACE Inhibitor) was the likely cause. My GP has stopped the perindopril and put me on candersartan instead. Really hope this does the trick.
Has anyone else had this problem?
I also take 12.5 Bisoprolol as well as Digoxin and Rivaroxaban daily.

Welcome to the 100 day cough club. There is a lot of it about! Its a virus! ( I believe it is a derivative of Covid but doesn't show as such on tests. )
Totally exhausting isn't it. I started about 1 month ago and despite my sleeping in a spare room my wife also now has it and about five days behind me. Every so often you start to think it is going so you do a bit and wham back it comes.
Could be the 100 day cough BUT, ace In hibitors give me an awful hacking cough. Now on candasartan and is much better. Time will tell. Hope candasartan does the trick
I know how you are all feeling I had this last year starting in February. I couldn't lie down. Slept in my recliner for 3 weeks. Lost my appetite and lost half a stone in weight. It took me ages to get my strength back and eat properly. Came back again in September and finally left end of October. I was really glad to see the end of 2023. So far this year I've felt better than I did the whole of last year. Hope you are all well soon.
I have read it is a known effect. Despite having a normal BP, I was put on losartan as a long-term "cardio-protective" which, luckily, has caused no side effects at all.
I too have had a persistent cough for couple of years. It’s difficult to remember when it started but I suspect it was after PAF diagnosis June 2021.
I’ve had X-rays, asthma tests etc., the conclusion is that it’s caused by meds or allergies. It varies, sometimes when pollen count is high it is worse, but it was horrendous when I stayed with a friend who uses fragrances in her home. I take candesartan, atorvastatin ( started after cough) and Edoxaban. I have wanted to change the candesartan before for a different side effect, but my EP who I really trust told me it is very beneficial for my heart so I’m putting up with it for the time being.
Ramipril similarly can cause a never ending cough in some people. I was switched to Candesartan and the cough went away in days. So maybe your Cardio nurse is on the right track. Good luck.
I can mirror your experience exactly. I put off seeking medical advice for almost a year, partly because of Covid priorities and partly because it's so very difficult getting an appointment with the GP. When I did finally succeed in doing so, I was received with concern and expertise, and was sent for a series of tests to eliminate cancer or other serious causes. My GP was pretty convinced that the cause was either the use of Ramapil - an ACE inhibitor - or acid reflux. I have now been on a different drug for raised blood pressure and a proton pump inhibitor for a month or two and am very relieved that the irritating and persistent cough has gone. Full marks to my GP for his knowledge and his care.
I can only say that my husband has been diagnosed with 100 day cough!! Similar symptoms and same silly cough all day and night. He's had it since December 14th. Our GP said it was the grown up version of whooping cough (which our granddaughter had at the start of December). She does like to share!!!
Hope things start to get better soon. Love and hugs. Jan xxx
