Hi all. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced increased bowel frequency - 3 to 5 times a day, but not diarrhoea - as a possible side-effect of long-term Apixoban use. I have AF, and my cardio specialist says it has been reported to him occasionally, mainly by women. (I'm a 77-year old male.) Sotalol, which I also take, is another possible candidate apparently, but less likely. He's put me on Rivaroxoban instead of Apixoban, but very recently, and the jury is still out. Thanks.

Apixoban and bowel frequency?
Have you reported this to your GP? It is dangerous to assume new symptoms are caused by medication unless the medication is new.
No, but I reported it to my cardiologist, who's changed that medication. The symptom in question has been gradually worsening for about a year, so it's not exactly new. But thanks for the advice. I certainly take your point that one can't be too careful where bowel habits are concerned!
I am on Apixaban ( Eliquise) and on Bisoprolol for quite time .The frequency( 2-3times)of bowel movement happened only recently. I checked with the gastroenterologist . Colonography doesn’t reveal problem, and I don’t think it’s issue with medications. .At least for me.
I am thinking ( as UK cardiologist dr. Gupta explained in his post about afib and gut connection) the one of the Afib triggers Is the sympathetic nerve stimulation, which runs in the gut.And it’s possible to have the similar to IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) conditions. Unfortunately, still many of the Afib triggers is misunderstood 😢 For example, I have swollen ankles, that isn’t getting much better after night, or tingling stomach sometimes as a sign of coming AFIB onset …
.Cardiology isn’t contacting those symptom!!🤔
I don’t think the intestine conditions due to eliquise . I would relate it to the sympathetic vague nerve as IBS trigger.
Please let me know if change to Xarelto will help
Thank you and good luck 🤞
Sotalol never worked for me to quell my Afib.
Sotalol is working for me. I now have normal sinus rhythm and have not had an episode in the last 7 months. However the side effects have me drowsy and low energy levels most of the time.
