Double dose apixoban

Has anyone taken double their Apixoban dose by mistake? I think I just have and don’t know how long to wait for next one? Am I at risk of a bleed?

Must get a box with days of the week.

It is not ideal, if I were you and you are in UK I would call 111 and ask them they will have the best & Quickest answer.

I certainly have done it - nothing bad happened but I was quite careful that day! The trouble with pill box is it’s really difficult to put any pill in foil into them and it’s not always advisable to take them out of the foil. What I do is - using a Sharpie I put an M = morning & E = evening at the top end of the foil - then mark down in the middle with M,T,W,T,F,S,S. I posted a pic of this method a year or so ago.

Hi I wasn’t aware u shouldn’t take them out of foil they’ve been in my pill box a couple of years.....is there a reason I’m missing?

Many pills that come in foil packs are susceptible to humidity but the main reason is to keep them fresh as they may also oxidise. I think if you refresh a pill box daily they should be ok. I use a small daily pill box - just so I know I don’t overdose or forget how many pills I’ve taken as Pyridostigamine, drug I take for Myasthenia, can cause very serious affects if I take too many so I put the max daily dose in my pill box, most days I don’t take them all but I then know how many I’ve taken. The others I just keep in foil packs but mark Apixaban morning & evening at the top of the foil pack with a Sharpie.

I know Pharmacist’s used to put meds into a marked blister pack for many people - don’t know if they still do?

Thanks everyone for advice. Got through yesterday and without too much worrying Abiut what ifs and back to normal today. Thanks too CDreamer. I ordered a box from amazon that will come today but think may be too small and going to follow your tip.

My Apixaban comes in strips, two tablets abreast so I take the left hand one in the morning and the right hand one at night so I can always see what I've had. I also write the date I started the box on it too as another check.😊

"New strip every Monday" is what I do - and I keep the strip next to my tooth paste! If I count down the strip I can work out what day of the week it is!

When i started on it i took both 5mg tablets in the morning. When I went for a repeat prescription the doc said to take them morning and night. I never felt any effect from this. Can't speak for others though.

Hi Prof the reason to take Apixaban morning and night is because they only have a half life of 12 hours so it is important to try to take them at 12 hour intervals to maintain adequate anti coagulation cover .

When I was reading up on a discussion of NOACS a the European Cardiology conference it was stated that the biggest problem with this new medication was patients failing to take them correctly predisposing them to a stroke risk .

I am sure we all make the occasional mistake when taking Meds, I know I have done so forgetting to take them when going out and spending the day worrying but disregarding the manufactures instructions is not wise.

It was more lack of instruction - The prescription was imprecise - I only did it for a month and wasn't in AF at the time.

Yup. I took two one morning and no arrythmia pill. I just took my normal dosage that evening. I bet you're fine. Using the pill box helps and so does having a clear routine. I have a bottle of water by my bed and take the pills in the morning before tea, or anything else.

Yes I have also done this ,I did not take my evening one, just started as normal next day ,it was very worrying,but was ok ,maybe give doctor a ring ?

I have however done the opposite on more than one occasion,especially if been out and home late ,forget my evening tablet !

I have never done this but have a problem with the evening pill. Because we have a late breakfast I take my morning pill between 9-30 and 10 with breakfast. Dinner is earlier than 12 hours after so I tend to be very erratic about the time I take the evening pill often forgetting it till midnight. It does not seem to have harmed me so far!
