My doctor changed my medication to Multaq 2/day. Does Multaq stop recurrence of afib or just lessen the occurrences and if also how toxic is it for the liver. Does it have any other side effects
Multaq: My doctor changed my medication... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Multaq
Multaq (Dronedarone) is an anti-arrhythmic drug , a cousin of amiodarone but less toxic. It is aimed to stop AF events occurring.
I took it for around (3) yrs and whilst it gave me breaks from Afib 10 to 14 days, it came back and always felt like it wasn't far away. Eventually it stopped working altogether and I requested to come off of it which I did.
If you go onto it you will have (I did) a blood test every month for 6 months, then every 3 months & then 6 monthly if all is well. I had no side affects to my knowledge.
I have been on Multaq for around three years. It gave me long breaks from AF , six months , 4 months , 3 months. However infections always put me back in A Fib. It is now not working as well as it used to and I have an appointment with my EP to review.
I have been taking multaq along with bisoprolol now for 3-4 years neither has stopped af occurances, but they do subdue it somewhat, thats all, dont expect too much.
I cried when they took me off Multaq! I was on it for 6 years and it pretty much stopped the AF except for some short runs. Then I had a huge attack was in the hospital and they told me Multaq had stopped working for me! It was a good run though.......shortly after had an ablation and pacemaker put in so far so good!!!
I was on dronedarone for 10 months twice daily. It didn't help with afib and caused rashes and extremely dry skin on hands n feet. Had afib every 7 to 10 days so didn't make any difference. I'm back on Sotolol with afib episodes every 2 to 3 weeks.( exausting) but slightly better. Don't recommend it.Waiting for appointment to see what's next.
I have been on Multaq over a year and a half following cardioversion and it's kept me in NSR - so far. But its efficacy is likely to wane over time, just hasn't happened yet. I have had no side effects I can point to. You do need a blood test - especially after the first 3 months - or less. I didn't have a problem with that first blood test so my cardiologist told me to have one every six months.
