I recently received some OTO Sleep drops as a gift. They are designed to be taken under the tongue just before bed, and contain 10% CBD with a ‘complementary blend of botanicals’ .
This forum has drummed into me the necessity to become aware of ingredients and contraindications, so when the instructions said to take advice if on regular medication, I did what I was told and Googled!
I was surprised to find that most cannabinoids in cannabis have an anticoagulant effect and the use of CBD can alter the metabolism of different blood thinners, including anticoagulants and anti platelet agents.
‘Research was undertaken due to the increased use of cannabidiol containing products posing potential risks with high alert medications such as oral anti coagulants. At the time of research, only Warfarin interactions were published and not DOACs’ (although this was deemed necessary). Research concluded ‘Further research is needed to conclude the drug interactions are associated with an increased risk of bleeding and thromboembolic events in these patients. Based on the potential risk and limited research, patients should use caution and possibly avoid , using cannabidiol and its derivatives with oral anticoagulants. These case reports outline a potential pharmacokinetic interaction between cannabidiol and its derivatives with oral anticoagulants. Education about the potential risk becomes paramount for patients and health care providers in preventing avoidable risk …. ‘
Given that my Edoxaban prescription has stopped my aspirin usage (the only OTC painkiller that really works for me) - I will not be taking these sleep drops … just in case!
This may be nothing - but thought I’d share as CBD seems to be in all manner of stuff these days and is generally suggested as ok for heart issues.
