AFIB and Levothyroxine (thyroid) dose.

Just a question for those of you that are hypothyroid and AFIB:

Is your dose of thyroid medication less because you have AFIB, currently or in the past?

Appreciate your input!

Thanks!

Hi there .No my dose of levothyroxine is and has always been the same. I've been on anticoagulants since February for AF and not long ago had my yearly blood tests, and my thyroid results have been ok too. Not noticed any difference really.

Hope that helps 🙂.

Thank you Lily.

Here in the US GPS tend to just refer to the wide TSH range indicators for acceptable. There are also dosing guidelines for cardiac patients which probably makes doctors wary when prescribing thyroid replacement prescriptions.

I believe it is important to monitor my own test results carefully. It can affect AFIB but it also affects many other physical processes.

Thanks again for your response.

I have a thyroid problem which I had long before I started suffering from AF and never had any problems and my dose o f Levothyroxine is just the same as before my AF. I am also on Warfarin, Losartan and Statins

Thank you Rosie

That’s comforting. I believe it should be that way.

Drugs for AF damaged my thyroid.

My GP was hoping my levels would go back to normal in time and didn't tell me anything with it was wrong. Then I was tested in hospital and the consultant there told my GP to put me on Thyroxine right away. Up to then I'd been feeling dreadfully tired and was sleeping afternoons. I'm now on 75mg of Levothyroxine and feel fine again. I think it may have decreased the severity of my AF attacks.

Thank you Jean,

Thyroid levels are very important to so many processes, including our cardiovascular systems.

It amazes me how many physicians are not concerned enough to monitor them effectively.

I am trying to avoid exactly the symptoms you described. It takes several weeks to adjust and correct.

Hi

NO!

Thyroxin goes on your weight.

I take 125 - a 100 & 25 Synthroid. I weigh 88kgs.

I need to be TSH 1.0-2.0 Surgeon orders.

I am in persistent AF. But in December 2021 I went to a private Specialist Cardiologist.

Now on CCB Diltiazem 120mg AM for H/R. was 156 now 60s. Day avge.

Now on Bisoprolol 2.5mg PM controls my hypertension.

Patience is best for balance.

Remember NO FOOD AROUND THYROXIN and Diltiazem.

cheers JOY. 74. (NZ)

Thank you Joy!

I agree and I am attempting to get my THS between 1 and 2.

I weigh 68 kg and recent TSH was 0.4 although my t4 conversion to t3 seems a little sluggish at 89ng. My GP immediately reduced Levo to 88.

The only reason she set up a thyroid panel is because I asked her to. Normally it is tested once a year.

I am in the 3rd month after Ablation so I was worried about my levels being off. No AFIB so far 🥳

HI Nezzera

I have no Thyroid because of Papillary Cancer. So all thyroid removed with 12 right lymphs as carcinoma was in right lobe with tiny bit on left.

So at your 0.4 you are in suppression. You are hyper thyroid.

To raise your TSH (forget about the total T4) you take less thyroxin.

T4 22.0 is the highest thyroxin on the scale.

I'm not sure whether you have your thyroid or not. Have you.

I dropped out of thyroid forum because I could no advice and it's called UK.

This AF forum is brilliant most of the time unless someone is on the bandwagon and taking sides.

I hope you stay. I will help you as much as I can.

I can have a TSH whenever I like and I am now taking less Synthroid. 125mg less 4 days of 100mg.

Synthroid is so much more reliable. Locourice? changed my results. The thyroid level was mucked up.

Synthroid fors..

1. A locked container 90 pills

2. Kiddie locked

3. Condensation thingy inside

4. I drop the pills sometimes with other brands.

5. Easy to regulate

6. Easy to keep to a level

88mg still may be too much on Synthroid.

You sound fit!

Synthyroid comes in 25, 59, 100, .....to 200mg

Take care, JOY. 74. (NZ)

Thank you so muchJoy. I feel better about taking the 88 Levothyroxine now.

Yes, still have my thyroid and try to stay fit to keep AFIB away and improve mobility. And, you are right! I was feeling a little hyperthyroid; jittery , anxious, a few PACs.

Hi

We all have special bodies and they all need balances!

Balances of hormones for our thyroid.

I'm off for a blood test at 9am fasting for the cholesterol to settle.

Thyroid problems can cause AF but I think several more unbalances to cause a stroke. I was worrying as the Johnson & Johnson TVT ragged mesh was trans towards another organ.

I had this out last February because once damage was seen on 3D scan ACC Acc decided to fund the operation. They had to wait for the damage and Covid got in the way.

You need more regular TSH tests. Say monthly until you find a balance.

Where are you, UK or USA or somewhere else.

I refused RAI after operation and suppression as Radio Active Iodine is a risk in many ways and suppression can affect the heart.

Take care.

I take Synthroid for my Hashimoto thyroid disease. I see my thyroid Dr every 3 months after getting blood work. It seems he changes the dose I take about everytine I go. It seems to work for me,because I feel normal. I am not fatigued like I was before the ablation in Aug 2022.

Thank you Hershel!

It is wonderful that your doctor is so attentive to your levels.

My dose changes every few months. My Dr does bloodwork every 3 months to keep an eye on the counts.

My Drs think that over medicated underactive thyroid contributed to me starting with AF so are reducing as not able to get AF under control.

Thank you LoveRowing,

I agree with your doctor. It used to affect my AFIB if my levels were too high or too low. Not to mention all the other regular hypothyroid symptoms.

yes I watch very carefully because it may have been the reason why a fib started, having too much thyroid medicine, go unnoticed. My system may be more sensitive because I also have celiac disease so my results can vary. I do have to watch and make some changes at times. All the best

Thank you for your response Fblue.

My AFIB was diagnosed at the same time as my hypothyroidism during a visit to the emergency room for fast AFIB. No telling how long I had it.

Everyone on this site has helped me to get through all of these issues.

Thanks to everyone.
