I had a colonoscopy last year and had sedation, it doesn't actually put you to sleep but makes you drowsy, it didn't bring on AF thankfuly and all was ok. If you are on anticoagulants you will probably need to come off them for a couple of days. When I rang the hospital they told me to stop apixaban 24 hrs before colonoscopy but when I had talk with Dr before he started it he said I should have stopped longer than that, and if I needed any polyps removed he couldn't do it but would do the colonoscopy, luckily I didn't have polyps. Best to check with hospital and if I need another one I will ask to speak to the Dr himself. Good luck.

To be honest if you were on apixaban you were clear anyway after 24 hours, Many doctors are not fully up to speed on NOACs

I had been back in sinus rhythm for 15 months before going for a colonoscopy.

When they were doing the colonoscopy I was slightly sedated but felt ok watching it on the screen. It was nearly finished when on the other screen I see my BP dropping to 40/29 and heart rate 30. I think are they going to do something about this? They suddenly panic.

Discharge notes say:

“Gellofusion was administered and .1ml of atropine given. Anaesthetist was called who then administered 1L of Hartman’s solution, an extra 3 mls of atropine and 20 mg of Boscopon .

Patient much improved and monitored in his room for rest of day”

The hospital is just a few streets away and I walked home feeling OK. When out the next day walking up a slope I was suddenly aware that my heart was racing and irregular. I got an appointment with the out of hours doctor who has an office at the hospital who told me I was back in AF.

The explanation was that I had become dehydrated or the probe had stimulated my vagus nerve. It was the vagus nerve as just over a year later I went back into AF after a digital rectal examination.

You don't HAVE to have the sedation. I had one without and it pinched a bit here and there, but I was fine afterwards and could drive myself home.

Not what you're looking for?
