Yes this subject comes up from time to time. My own take on this is that the brain finds a reason for the heart racing hence the nightmares rather than the nightmares causing the AF. One must also accept that many of the drugs used can be to blame..
That’s a reasonable hypothosis Bob as during our dreaming state the task is to try to make sense of our experiences of the day.
It was explained to me that all the info we take in has to be filed in different areas so can become jumbled. Doesn't explain all my anxiety dreams where I can't find my car/phone/wife/ sons/ workshop/ house or I find myself back at work in London! Those I just accept and have got quite good at recognising I am in a dream. Accept it. I'm a lost cause! lol 😁
Matthew Walker - neuroscientist - is the man to read on this. As to lost causes.....you may think so.....I couldn’t possibly comment.
I have the same problem Bob and I am often lost. Wish I knew how to stop the anxiety because I have nothing to feel anxious about and I am happy when awake. I suppose it is the meds. Just comforting to know someone else is in the same position.
I've often had vivid disturbing dreams, usually I've put it down to the meds but having been off them for a while, I still get them. I can't say they've been caused by AF or have caused my AF though.
While taking a dose of 2 x 100mg of Flecainide, along with 2 x 12.5mg of Metoprolol, it caused me to have what could sometimes be extremely scary dreams/hallucinations. Trying to explain to people who don't understand how this feels (without sounding like you're going mad) is hard. It's one of those things you have to experience to truly understand.
I feel for you Mbhakta. What medication are you taking for your AF and could that be causing your dreams as it was for me?
Jean
I had bad nightmares when i was on Amiodarone, now im off it there gone,
just got Thyroid trouble now.
Since confirmation of my AFib I have slept on my back or on my right side. Although being on my back is by far the most comfortable position for me to sleep, I do dream constantly, some of which are most unpleasant. My husband also tells me I snore!
