I've had AF for 20 years .2 .5 years ago I had blood tests for Calcium and PTH after breaking a wrist chopping down Olive trees.
I was diognosed with Hyperparathyroidism as the calcium was high and the PTH high as well as a dexa scan showing osteopenia, following this I had to have a couple of stents then recently diognosed with Heart failure.
HFpEF.
Seems to me there is a connection between having Hyperparathyroidism and AF who knows how long I've had this Hyperparathyroidism ive never been tested for it before and wondering if there is any connection between them all infact has anyone ever had these two blood tests before ?
This isn't just for females so guys your comments are welcome

Do you know the cause of the parathyroid problem ? are you being treated ? If it’s an adenoma it needs to be removed.
Hyperparathyroidism is not a common disease so I can’t see there would be a link, however thyroid disease ( which isn’t connected to parathyroid disease) is very common and the majority of patients will have some form of heart arrhythmia.
I had hyperparathyroidism, hyperthyroidism and now have hypothyroidism and the thyroid diseases are far more likely to have caused my heart problems.
Ive no idea what had caused it I've had lots of scans including the 4 D semmsibi scanMy cardiologist says he's not sure if it's linked to AF or heart failure but there is quite a bit online saying it causes arrhythmias. I have been having 3 monthly blood tests calcium PTH and vitamin D now I have been diognosed with primary for hyperparathyroidism and will be having surgery in the New Year they are a bit concerned doing surgery on someone with so many heart issues but if I don't have it I will only get worse
It’s the high calcium that causes the arrhythmias but as I said hpth isn’t a common occurrence and it’s notoriously difficult to diagnose as levels naturally go up and down so catching a consistent pattern takes time.
If you are having surgery they must be pretty sure you have an adenoma, hopefully you have a very experienced surgeon as it’s not an easy op and last thing you want is to lose more paras than necessary.
Definitely keep an eye on your thyroid levels and if you need help interpreting the levels go to Thyroiduk forum.
Thanks it's not something I'm looking forward to but the calcium as you say does the damage leaching into the bloodstream out of the bones I'll take a look at the Thyroiduk forum see if it as anything new for me
I did get tested for Thyroid Bob but didn't have any problem with that .As bantam12 said its quite rare to have hyperparathyroidism its not the thyroid but 4 little glands behind the thyroid size of a grain of rice.
Yes, I believe there is, in the 20 odd years of having A/F I am always being tested for it but so far it comes back as borderline, Cardiologist said it was the first thing they looked for!!! I don't know if there is any correlation but I am allergic to Scallops, something to do with Iodine apparently.
Hmm well I'm not allergic to scallops but interesting that you think there could be a connection certainly not the first thing my cardiologist looked for he's not convinced
My doctor picked up that I had high blood calcium in a blood test. I had been having arrhythmia on and off. Went to endocrinologist and had one parathyroid removed that was enlarged. After that I had no issues for the next 11 years but now am dealing with arrhythmias/ flutter/afib/tachycardia. This time however calcium levels are normal.
I think I'm having the bigger one as more than one adeoma is involved I don't look forward to looking like I slit my throat ,your lucky to have the smaller one .
