hi everyone as you know I had my second ablation in June which I am doing ok from and my EP has took me off of one of my tablets but what I want to know is have any of you had problems with your bowels since having it done ? I was put on lamprazole for the first six weeks and this time it really upset my stomach I am now coming up to ten weeks post ablation and am still having upset stomachs.

Thanks Anita

You have answered your own question I think. PPIs are not something I would entertain for more than a couple of weeks. Very difficult to come off.

Absolutely. I've a feeling they recently got a black mark on the World Health Organisation list. Read something about it in medscape.

I've had 3 ablations, but they never upset my stomach.

I agree with BobD. Just finished 28 days of Prilosec and 4 weeks post ablation.

Stomach is slightly upset and hiccups on and off throughout the day. Hopefully it will calm down and get back to normal.

A very few people react to the PPI drugs with constipation, I gather. A friend did and won't take them, but then he didn't really need them in the first place. Try taking a magnesium salt in the form of Milk of Magnesia or Andrews Liver Salts. That can't fail to get things moving and works gently overnight. If you've managed to become properly bunged up with an impaction, you might possibly need something a little different like Cosmocol, available from any pharmacist. that will take a few days to do its work, but, again, is gentle and will not fail.

As for PPI drugs, keep in mind that they are absolute life savers for many people who suffer with reflux acid, preventing gastric erosion and worse. The number of potentially life changing and frequently risky gastric and oesophageal surgeries have literally plummeted since those drugs were discovered, saving very many lives, I imagine. A catheter ablation can on occasion cause severe erosion, too, hence your prescription.

We wouldn't be without our heart drugs, despite their very many often risky side effects, and the same applies to many other kinds of drugs, including PPIs. Stomach issues, like heart issues, aren't to be taken lightly. The only thing to be sure of is that they are absolutely needed before you take them.

Well said Steve. I get rather fed up with the frequent bashing of PPIs. For me Omeprazole has made my life bearable. I’m on a small dose and have had no side effects of which I’m aware. I’ve spoken several times to GPS about the PPI concerns and I’m always told that my small dose is not a concern.

I got a bit worried recently having had some side effects, but a full blood test showed no effect from my esomeprazole, so that pleased me as comments here do get me worried. The GI specialist I say two years ago sang their praises overall.
