Hello all, just a general inquiry, does anyone know where in the UK you can get good quality Magnesium to use as a supplement, I presently get mine from Holland and Barrett, they are probably ok but you have no way knowing the quality of the product. Thank you. Bluesman

Not sure how Independant they really are but this article (link below) has some useful info you may find useful.

I tend to avoid H&B because I’ve reacted to some fillers they use & I really don’t like how they list the active ingredients in tiny print but the tablet size in large.

I use a topical magnesium oil spray as I can’t tolerate any Magnesium oral supplements but everyone is different so what suits one doesn’t another.

You might also check Ancient Minerals website - good article on contraindications for some conditions on taking Magnesium & how aware your need to be if you take certain meds ancient-minerals.com/magnes...

Good morning CDreamer, please could you tell me which spray you use and where you get it from? Many thanks

I get it from my local Health Food Store because it’s convenient and having tried a few have settled on Better You which seems to suit me. H&B stock their products or you can buy direct online. I have tried the Ancient Minerals that was also good but a bit too efficacious for me as I have a condition which Mag can exacerbate.

Thank you for that. Magnesium tablets make me feel very odd so I will try a spray. Also my mum suffers with restless leg syndrome and I’ve heard a mag spray is good for that too

H and B sell two types of Magnesium, Mg oxide and Mg Citrate. I believe the latter is better for absorption . According to Dr Sanja Gupta of York Cardiology the best Mg to take is Mg Taurate but H and B do not sell this.

From my days in the pharmaceutical industry, I think you will struggle to find out the origin of the tablets you take, or at least, any ingredients. A good local company that does manufacture the highest quality generic medicines is Boots ("BCM") in Nottingham, but there are other manufacturers in Leicester and various other places. I would trust Boots retail myself every time since their QC control is as high as it gets. They certainly formulate magnesium hydroxide gel, which they sell as Phillips Milk of Magnesia. Many generic tablets are also made overseas for cost reasons, for example, in Malta.

The highest level of absorption for magnesium will always be from the natural occurring organic salt that is abundantly available in vegetable plant cells as chlorophyll. I gather that levels in non-organic vegetables can be about a quarter lower than in the mid twentieth century, but are still abundant and there's plenty in any normal diet. If you eat vegetables, pulses and grains, it's hard to see why you will need extra magnesium unless you have an electrolyte imbalance caused by, for example, kidney issues. In that case, a doctor's advice is needed since potassium and sodium will also be out of kilter and the effects will be clear enough health wise.

Other than that, all genuinely scientific studies that I've read show no practical difference between the various salts and compounds available from industrial sources. For example, I have read on pseudo-science sites that magnesium oxide is the least well absorbed, and that magnesium chloride is the best absorbed. But if it is considered that magnesium oxide is immediately converted to magnesium chloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid, i.e. stomach acid, the claim suddenly shows itself to be spurious. The science on many websites is suspect and often woeful, but the truth is, they don't care since they are peddling other than the truth. They want our money or the ad revenue from our mouse clicks.

Magnesium taurate is liked by many and is quite well absorbed. but no better, practically, than any other form. I would ask at Boots the Chemist shops if they sell or manufacture it, otherwise H&B, but as for its origin and quality, it will likely be impossible to find out. It has a relatively tiny amount of free magnesium in it compared to, say, magnesium sulphate (Epsom Salts). Retailers like it since they can charge much more for it at present as it's become fashionable, sounds "complex" and because taurine itself is also in vogue. Its effects will be a placebo almost certainly (in my view) but that's irrelevant if it works for an individual.

Thanks very much Steve, you seem to have a very good handle on the subject, I appreciate your reply. John

Explain why any effects from taurine will be a placebo please. Do you think that Dr Gupta recommends it because it is fashionable?

Ppiman profile image
Ppiman in reply toAuriculaire

It’s only because, as I understand things, for taurine to have any therapeutic effect, which is not scientifically proven but is possible, far larger doses are needed than can be administered as the magnesium salt.

Dr Gupta is an unusual and, in many ways, wonderful doctor. I have no idea why he promotes some of what he does, however, since it is not, as far as I can ascertain, in agreement with standard medical or scientific understanding.

I don’t doubt that he will be deeply aware of the placebo effect and of the part anxiety and other psychological aspects play in ill health.

Doctors are not immune to fashions in medicine, but I can’t say anything about him in that respect. He certainly dresses well! 😉

That's interesting. It might be better then to take a much cheaper form of magnesium and add taurine in a bigger dose. I take magnesium taurate and it is expensive but the brand I take comes in 100mg capsules. My main problem with other cheaper types has been that they come in enormous pills that I have difficulty swallowing! I like to take it 3 times a day and it is difficult to find 100mg doses .

hi auriculaire what if any benefits do you receive from taking taurate ie has it stopped afib or lessened occurances thanks

Auriculaire profile image
Auriculaire in reply toTomred

No but my attacks are far less symptomatic and it has done away with my anxiety attacks!

Ppiman profile image
Ppiman in reply toAuriculaire

I have read of that. I don’t know much about taurine but was looking recently for a friend. I think magnesium taurate caught on because of the taurine link. The amount of magnesium in it is tiny so it’s unlikely to affect the bowels as a laxative unless a large number of tablets is taken.

I use Biocare , a UK company for Magnesium Tarate.

I would not buy them from Amazon though ...

Magnesium Taurate is the best for hearts apparently. Get the Cardiovascular Research brand which can be obtained via Amazon. I think Dr Sanjay Gupta of the famed York Cardiology has mentioned this version. Works for me anyway as has calmed my problems.

I saw your reply to one post asking what the dosage was. I too have struggled with this because the quoted mg in some responses is the size of the capsule not the actual amount of elemental magnesium.I take 500mg capsules of Mag Citrate with 150mg of elemental magnesium once a day. I believe it has helped me a lot as my heart calmed a few days after starting.I buy them off the Amazon monster, made by Swiss BioEnergetics, no idea if they are better or worse that any alternative though.

Intelligent Labs , Haywards Health, Uk at ca.intelligentlabs.org makeMagEnhance. Magnesium Glycinate 690 mg, Magtein magnesium L-Threonate 1000mg and Magnesium Taurate 630 mg. I get it at Amazon.ca in Canada. It is also in the US. Just started taking it. Seems like it works and is a good product. No bad stuff. Lots of positive reviews on their site.

Trust Worthy - reviews posted by CDreamer seems a bit suspect. Only one recommended magnesium supplement. Surely there are more.
