What thoughts do you have on topical CBD cream to treat an arthritic neck as I take apixaban.

Any comments would be appreciated.

I use arnica gel and it is quite effective for aches due to arthritis. I have read somewhere that CBD does not work that well topically.

I’d also be more inclined to try something like arnica gel before CBD, which I know very little about.

I have 2 titanium hips , arthritic knees and and 84 yr old husband who’s an ex Para & Himalayan climber , we’re a bit arthritic & sore sometimes! I use loads of Neal's Yard Arnica Salve ....it helps us both hugely & goes in very well. We’re both on different types of anti coagulants .Hes on Clopidogerel & I’m on Rivaroxaban . I’m lucky, I also run a Neal's Yard business, so zi get mine at trade cost. I’m happy to do a discount for any AF members here . Just PM me if you want to try some

Ask your pharmacist for advice on taking CBD. I was lucky as there is a pharmacist near where I live who has made a study of various types and strengths of CBD oil and ointment and my pharmacist sent me to see him. To be honest it didn't really help me but I have got a lot of spinal damage so that is probably why.

mrgwair567 profile image

Thanks for your input.

Maybe it’s not such a good idea after all.

Desanthony profile image
Desanthony in reply to mrgwair567

No do try it it may work for you. Everything is worth trying. I have severe damage to my spine at neck and lumbar areas and we have found out that the neck pain is from trapped nerves some of the time. Not much stops that pain coming through - I am on the strongest pain killers I can take with all my other problems - though have been on stronger, diclofenac worked best but not allowed that any longer. The best thing i have now are lidocaine patches which I use during the night when the pain is really bad. Knee pain is now gone since my total knee replacement last August - though when my knee was really bad I didn't have so much back pain - one cancels the other out I suppose. All the best to you and give it a try.

I didn't find any relief from the plasters my pain is also considered to be from nerve damage and the only thing that helps me is pregabalin which is supposed to treat epilepsy but if it works I would try anything. Pain is so debilitating.

Also on Apixaban sorry forgot to mention that.

Desanthony profile image
Desanthony in reply to healme

Yes I don't think it is taking the pain from the nervein my neck away but takes the edge off the rest of the pain - my neck is still very painful at times but the patches seem to give me some respite from it and allow me to get some rest. As no longer allowed to take my usual pain killers - used to be on co-proxamol and diclofenac which usually worked a lot of the time and no anti inflammatories. Was hoping after my successful Cardioversions I could come off apixaban so take stronger painkillers and antinflammatories but no now my age has caught up with me and told to stay on apixaban. Just keep moving.

Hi

Will do a little more research I think.

Thanks for the information and for your encouragement!

Hope that your pain relief is working a little better for you.

Having af doesn’t help does it as we can’t take anti inflammatories.

Thanks again , keep well and keep safe

As you cannot measure your anticoagulant levels on NOACs and as there is a significant risk of messing up a liver enzyme involved in metabolizing apixaban, then you are taking a risk with CBD oil due to absorption. I quote from this very website "It has to do with the fact that CBD is a powerful inhibitor of the liver enzyme that metabolizes apixaban (and many other medications). The enzyme is called CYP3A4. If this enzyme is inhibited it could allow more of the drug to enter your systemic bloodstream than normal" .

I was going to do some research , but itlooks like you’ve answered the questions.

I totally agree, jrd210 I take Warfarin, and I definitely wouldn’t use any herbal or other creams or oils. I think the Anti Coag Nurse needs to be consulted before I would use ANYTHING that may interfere with Warfarin.I don’t know much about Apixiban but I assume anyone on any Anti Coag needs to be very careful.

Thanks.

I have taken the information that jrd210 and others have supplied concerning CBD on board and see that this is not a good idea.

However I’ve learned so much from all these posts , Hope others have too!!

Last article I read, said it was a waste of time, as the good stuff can’t penetrate the skin!

I have used my home made CBD oil, after oral surgery & I highly recommend it but I ate it lol

I am on Pradaxa. I have sore feet problems and I rub CBD gel on them. I have no pain. My husband takes CBD capsules for back pain. He does not have Afib. He finds that he bleeds easier, so he stopped taking baby aspirin which solved the problem. So CBD does thin your blood.

Hi -- I have really bad pain in my left knee from osteoarthritis which flares up regularly, keeping me from sleeping. I have tried EVERYTHING over the years. This CBD roll-on stuff works better than anything else I ever tried. Within 2 minutes, the pain is totally gone and stays gone for a few hours. They also have CBD drops, I just got some and am anxious to test them out to see if they help the arthritis that I have throughout my body.

I would definitely check with a pharmacist before trying this. From the CBD Education Online website (cbdeducationonline.com/cbd-... )

There are no studies that have tested drug interactions in people who are taking both at the same time. However, indirect research shows there may be an interaction. The body breaks down Eliquis mostly by using the enzymes CYP3A4 and P-GP. Studies have shown that CBD can inhibit both CYP3A4 and P-GP in humans. Since these are the enzymes that remove Eliquis from the body, taking CBD at the time may increase the levels of Eliquis in the blood.

Just found this link which may be useful re the liver enzyme referenced above ebmconsult.com/content/page...

You can check which meds inhibit the enzyme as well as herbal remedies. I just checked out Maca as I take that.

We use Arnica cream in our house. In fact it is on auto-delivery from Amazon. My wife has recently discovered a cream called Noxicare that is available in the US. She finds she gets faster relief with that product. It is much more expensive, but she was able to recently purchase it on a buy one bottle, get 2 free.

I have systemic arthritis and my GP is trying to get me diagnosed for EDS so am in constant pain and have several disc issues in my neck and back and I find Pernaton gel very effective which is available on prescription. Pernaton gel is a green lipped musssel gel made in Switzerland. It absorbs really well and you can use it as frequently as you like. I also use

helios rhus tox cream which I think is very good.

Hi Flutterbird

Do you know if it’s ok to use Pernaton if you take Apixaban?

Thanks

Flutterbird profile image
Flutterbird in reply to mrgwair567

Yes because it does not contain any medicine as such. I think it is recommended as an alternative to ibuleve etc which you cannot use if you have certain health conditions. I did use a CBD preparation but I find pernaton more effective and it doesn't stain clothing or bedding like some topical preparations. My pharmacist said you can also get it on prescription although I haven't asked.
