I write only on the basis of my own experience. I am not a doctor. This can also be a sign of low platelets which can easily be detected in a blood test. I have just been diagnosed with low platelets and was warned of nose and gum bleeds but so far this has not happened.I take Apixaban and it has never caused any problems in 4 years so the docs are puzzled and are adopting a 'wait and see' attitude for the time being.
More important is to see your hygienist as healthy gums to not bleed. I spent years not beleiving this until my teeth starting coming out. Anticoagulants can be useful in flagging up such matters.
National Health dentistsry does not do hygiene and for 60 years I was ignorant. Under my private Denplan( other schemes are available) I have three monthly hygienist visits which are managing to retain what few teeth I still have.
I agree that hygienists are good, I have been several times myself. Thanks Bob.
The blood test is simply a precaution to gain more clarity and information. Once the GP receives the results, they can evaluate whether everything is in balance or anything further needs to be done. Getting further clarity will help reduce your worry.
Thank you for your reply, I found it helpful.
When I was first diagnosed with AF I had nose bleeds and bruising. After one particularly haeavy one in the night that almost soaked through a pillow I contacted gp was put on a reduced dose of apixaban. Never had a problem after that. Transpired I got the reputation of being a hyper-responder as whatever I have been prescribe, I have ended up with a smaller dose than normal.
It came with dreadful diarrhoea for me so I was taken off it pretty soon after I started on it! Since Flecainide has put an end to episodes for me, I have not needed an anticoagulant, fortunately. How different we all are! The EP who prescribed the Flecainide for me originally, told me that unless episodes continued for a long time with a high heart rate, I was not “at risk of stroke” anyway and mine never did. Hope you get suitable medication soon as bleeding gums must be horrible.
Hi, yes I get this despite regular visits to the hygienist, maybe I should ask to change to a different medication?
if you have any kind of infection it will show in your mouth. I had a lot of kidney infections last year and had bleeding gums on and off - and im an ex dental nurse so my dental hygiene is pretty good!
I didn’t get on with rivaroxaban they gave me UTIs so changed to apixaban. Much kinder
To be on the safe side though see your EP, cardiologist or GP
I used to have rivaroxaban my gums bled. Since changing to apixaban I have had no bleeding from the gums . So may be a change in the anticoagulant might work.
My GP dropped me fown from 20 mg to 10mg a year ago because of bleeding etc. Iys worked out good. Im 82.
I’m on Edoxaban and get occasional heavy gum bleeds, lasting a couple of days. Bloody pillows are the worst thing, and looking like a vampire!
Dental hygienist says as long as it stops in that sort of timespan, just an inconvenience.
But my gum health was poor to start with, so I’m a regular at the hygienist. Hope you get sorted out.
I used to get lots of bleeding when brushing my teeth with Apixaban . A new dentist referred me to the hygienist and now no bleeding
I changed from Warfarin to Riveroxaban last year, but only get slight bleeds.
I have been on Apixaban (Eliquis) for just under 2 years but recently a blood test said my platelets had dropped, also my red cell blood count. At the same time I have had 3 episodes of bleeding from the gums; quite bad in one case. My dentist could see no reason apart from a filling that had come out. He said my gums and teeth were very clean and in good shape and didn't need to see their private hygienist. Last week I broke a crown and also some further minimal bleeding from the same tooth where the severe bleeding had originated. I am having another DOAC review with the GP's pharmacist tomorrow . It could all be related to the low platelets caused by the Eliquis (apixaban) but I will post any update tomorrow that might be helpful.
I take rivaroxaban, and don't have bleeding gums. I don't eat sugar or refined foods, but back when I did, I used to get bleeding gums despite not being on an anticoaguant then! So in my case, it's diet that makes the difference. But heavy gum bleeds definitely sound like something to check with your doctor.
