SVT and pre-synscope on swallowing

Hi there

I have developed again a feeling of blackout when I swallow for about 5 seconds where I have to put my head down. It happens with any food consistency even runny porridge. Fluid ok. It’s been happening for almost two weeks now and not getting any better. It also trigger my SVT which I will be getting ablated for in March. The black out part is far worse. I’m used to my SVT. Been taking Omeprazole since it started. Been to docs who doesn’t know what else to suggest. She has emailed to specialists. I have now decided just to take liquid meal substitutes like complain. Not sure why it all triggered. I started taking apixaban on 5th January for my ablation. I note that it can cause acid reflux. But thought the Omeprazole would have worked by now. Has anyone experienced similar.

Hi Elsieclarke. I’m sorry to hear about your problem and it sounds quite scary. I have a similar diagnosis to you (SVT and atrial tachycardia) and have been put forward for an ablation in the Spring (first one). I just wanted to say that I have very weird feelings in my throat (pressure and nausea) and I call it my “throat nausea”!). It’s a really horrible feeling but it’s probably not quite what you’re feeling. I also have a multi nodular goitre and autoimmune thyroid disease so some times I think it could be this. The more I read however the more I think it’s my heart as now every time I eat anything my heart starts racing and I sometimes don’t want to finish what I’m eating as the pressure builds up in my throat. I’m convinced I have POTS as well - morning heart rate is around 130 on standing with very low BP! I hope you can find an explanation/solution to your problem. This forum is wonderful for help and support.

Hi

Thanks for your reply - it’s all such a worry isn’t it. Sorry to hear about your troubles too. I’m looking forward to my ablation. It’s my first for SVT. Have had two for Afib.

I hope for both of us that this somehow sorts our throat issues.

I agree this forum is a great place for support. I look at posts every day and feel I have learned so much.

Elsie, I'm so sorry to hear how you're suffering. Not knowing how to help you, I Googled swallowing and syncope and read there that it's quite a rare condition. Have you Googled it?

I do wonder if either Apixaban or Omeprazole are the cause as they're the new drugs you've recently started taking. Perhaps on their own they'd be ok, but taken together not.

Do you live on your own? If so, this must be a scary condition for you. How I wish I were a millionaire, so I could whisk you off to a private clinic and get this sorted asap.

Keep in touch please and let us know how things progress.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I live with my husband and two teenage kids so not alone. The PPI Omeprazole I have only started after symptoms commenced in the hope it would help. Perhaps it will in time. I did get the same symptoms for a day or so a few times last year but it always resolved itself. I have private health care through my work but they don’t cover for pre-existing conditions. So will see what the NHS doctor comes back with when she gets a reply from the specialists she has emailed. I’m probably being too impatience.

Every right to be impatient. Not knowing always so stressful. Do hope you get some answers soon.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. I managed to eat my porridge this morning without being light headed. So hoping the PPI have kicked in. I also noticed that my does of apixaban that hospital put me on for my ablation is 5mg twice daily but noticed on NHS website that it should be 2.5mg is under60kg. I’m 51.4kg. Have phoned doctor surgery to contact hospital and see what they say. It may be different as it’s preparing for an ablation but grasping at straws now to find a solution 😀

Hi Elsie

Do you drink about 2 .2 litres of fluid every day (about 7 mugs ). I had a syncope faint and was told to drink an extra 2-3 pints of water. Haven't had once since

Hi

I do drink quite a lot but perhaps don’t some days as don’t think about quantity too much. I’ll try and keep a more careful eye and see if this helps. Thanks.
