A couple of years ago I had a catheter ablation which was 70% successful in eliminating my Afib, which was great but slightly disappointing too. After 6 months my cardiologist said it was unlikely that it would improve further. Then I heard about Magnesium supplements and how good they were for the heart, so I started taking them. After a couple of months I realised I wasn't getting any symptoms of Afib and had a 24 hour ECG done. No Afib was detected. Now I feel normal and have no trouble in exercising or striding up staircases, 2 steps at a time, like I used to. See yorkcardiology.co.uk/benefi... for more info. Also around the same time I started meditating twice a day for 20mins a time. Initially I was doing transcendental mediation but realised pretty quickly that you don't need an indian guru or pay £600 for a course in it, you can in fact learn the same technique in a non-spiritual manner (for free!) I highly recommend a book called the Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson (amzn.eu/fwh9W0u). I believe meditating and taking the magnesium supplements has helped me greatly. It's possible only one of these things really helped, why not try both separately and see if they help you?
Negligible Afib (if any at all) after... - Atrial Fibrillati...
Negligible Afib (if any at all) after doing these 2 things...
well done. I think a lot of people have done what you have with benefit.
What type of magnesium do you take? I had an abliation three months ago and suffer now from stress and depression. Yikes. Also we are hoping abliation worked. On metoprolol
Magnesium Taurate. 1 capsule twice a day, morning and evening.
I get mine from Amazon.
If you haven't already I would advise speaking to your GP or cardiologist re the stress and depression. I know Bisoprolol made me feel heavy and quite depressed while taking it, but I was taken off it a couple of weeks after my ablation.
Thank you. Are you on any meds now for afib or blood pressure? Did you get your magnesium checked first? I am in the USA and this has been some experience. Thank you
No I stopped taking blood thinners a few months after surgery. I didn't have my magnesium levels tested, I just thought I would give the supplements a go and I'm convinced it has helped me a lot.
It's taken about a year for me to feel normal and healthy again. I was obsessively checking my heart rate throughout the day but I noticed after some months I had stopped doing it, because I wasn't getting the symptoms of Afib anymore.
Are yiu in USA? I am in USA and live close to Manhattan. Abliation was done at a cardiac hospital in nj
It does make me nerveous every feeling. Have to wear a monitor for two weeks next week
No I'm in the UK, got it done at St Thomas's in London. I was nervous initially before I was diagnosed but once I had been and treatment was started I relaxed considerably because I knew they had it under control. Of course I was still getting Afib for some time after the procedure (which is to be expected) but there was no real fear, the only thing that does make my hair stand on end is the fact that I ignored it for a long time before getting treatment, we are the lucky ones. Have faith in the treatment you've been given, you'll be fine you've done the hard part already.
I also started taking Magnesium after my ablation, i think ive had one very short run in the last 13 months .
I did take the capsules but find them a bit harsh on the digestive system, so i have just bought some magnesium oil spray and going to give that a go.
Also i'm convinced magnesium bought my blood pressure down quite a lot
Hi Keith, thank you for those tips. You've given me the push to restart with magnesium and I've just been and sprayed some on my legs. The magnesium tablets tend to give me a sore stomach - a bit acid like, but I have some and will try them again now that you've inspired me. Will give the meditation a go too.
Thank you.
Jean
Glad that is working for you. I too take 400mg magnesium oxide daily along with Vitamin D, 1000IU and Niacin 500mg along with exercise and less coffee and alcohol which has allowed me to be 95% AF free this past year. Still carry PIP just in case for the few times it has occurred. Mediation I have learned is anything that distracts you from anxiety and takes you to a calmer place. I struggle with that.
Hi Keith I take magnesium taurate too from Bio care which was 'poopood' by the Dr/cardiologist's assistant I saw at the arrhythmia clinic . I have definitely slept better since taking it, I used to get leg pains that kept me awake but don't now.
I am feeling so much healthier and my P-AF and blood pressure have both improved with a combination of lifestyle changes and medication.
Pleased to hear you have found something that works for you.
Everybody should try this, it costs very little, more benefits than just AF reduction and no side effects! Thanks for posting, it has worked well for me for 4 years.
