Infected ICD shock lead

Not posted for a while. March to be exact. I have been in hospital with Sepsis. Somehow the shocker cable of CRT-D had become infected and it has been 6 weeks of strong antibiotics and surgery to move my CRT kit about.

Got home last Friday to recover – feel like I have been hit by a train.

I had to get a replacement ICD fitted and wondered how long is is before I can have a shower?

Oh my goodness - that’s not good! I am waiting for a Pace and Ablate and was told that there is a 20% chance of infection with any implantable device.

Not the good sort of bacteria you got there.

I would ring your consultant to ask about when you can shower but I would imagine you want to be extra, extra careful after that experience!

Do hope you recover soon.

Hi..Im down for the pace and ablate...I had sepsis and was in intensive care for 6 weeks just over 2 years ago..do you know if I maybe more susceptible to any infections?

That’s bad luck.

I really would not know - perhaps something to ask your doctor? Thank goodness you recovered.

I take immune suppressants so I know I would be of higher risk of infection and not sure how they will cope with that.

Best wishes

Hi Ogilvie. I seem to remember it was for about 3 days until the wound has healed but don’t quote me on that !!

I am so sorry you had to go through that. Hope your recovery goes smoothly. My pacemaker leads protrude under the skin and I have to watch for infection also. Best wishes to you!

What an awful experience for you. I don't know about showering but I have experience of sepsis (after a hysterectomy). The hospital were frantically administering three types of antibiotics until the bacteria was identified and I recovered. (there is a point to all this!) But two weeks later I collapsed with Clostridium difficile, a gastrointestinal infection acquired as a direct result of the good gut bacteria being destroyed by powerful antibiotics. So be very aware that should you develop any D&V symptoms, get in touch with your doctor immediately.

With all good wishes for a speedy recovery.
