Do you think that shock can bring on AF?

My husband had an ablation at the beginning of January, it took a good few weeks to settle but since then fine. In the last week we’ve had two deaths ( both unexpected & in their 40s) & our nephew has had a stroke again unexpected & young. My husband is now back in AF could shock of caused it. Awaiting a call from the clinic. Many Thanks

Hi Caza, sorry to hear you've had those deaths recently and then your poor nephew having a stroke. Shock is a form of stress and can certainly bring on an AF attack for me.

I was watching a programme I'd recorded about the twin towers bombing in the U.S. last night, I was already in AF (have been since 1st Aug) but it became worse as I grew more distressed viewing it. People may say, don't watch it then, but I felt that would have been disrespectful to all those who so tragically lost their lives.

Hope your husband gets some positive help with his AF soon. Please let us know.

Jean

Thanks for replying. Yes 9/11 was very shocking even now when I see the footage & know what’s going to happen I still can’t believe it did

It’s so hard I’ve tried to take over most things & I’ve even tired not to show my feelings but I can’t keep everything away from him. He doesn’t look well today.

Did you get your call from the clinic?

He’s just on the phone now

He’s got to have an ECG tomorrow at our local surgery & they will email it to his consultant & then take it from there. In the meantime listen to his body & call 999 if he has chest pain for more than 10mins.

Really feel for him, it's horrible when you're not too sure just what your heart is doing when it's playing up. If he starts feeling hot, sweaty and faint I'd call for help then too. When I have that I usually dial the NHS advice line and they always send paramedics, without fail I've been kept in hospital for a few days until my heart rate calms.

Thanks for the advice. He was dizzy & very pale earlier but is fine now his pulse is all over the place though. Will ring our GP first thing.

Personally I wouldn’t wait. I was told if my heart rate went over 130 (it has been known to go 240-250 then lost count as like a running stream going over Rick’s and mountains and doing acrobats) and especially if irregular to call an ambulance. I do hope hubby feels better soon. Please rather be safe than sorry and don’t wait for GP in the morning.

Thanks for replying. We did wait but only because after resting he seemed so much better.

Absolutely. Any severe upset can bring on bad episodes. Sorry for your losses.

Thanks for replying.

There’s little that you can do in this situation. I can’t keep bad news away. He was doing so well. He does seem a lot better this morning. When he was in AF before it was continuous but this seems to be on & off. We’ll see what the ECG reveals.

Hi, I have SVT and before I was on Bisoprolol to stop it I found that shocks or surprises that tended to cause a rush of adrenalin would cause my heart rate to spike and set off the SVT. Lying down and breathing calmly usually got my hr to drop again.

Thanks for replying. He did lie down & felt better afterwards.

Not sure if a shock can cause it , but think stress may play a part , I was ablated end of May , been under major stress last week , and Sunday night my heart starts doing things it shouldn’t , took a Flecinaide which I’d weened off and things settled overnight

In A&E the GP was concerned. Yes he has got some leftover Flecinaide but wouldn’t take them without asking the GP.

Thanks for replying

Hi Yes it can, i had a similar shock this week and its given me a number of episodes despite being on the lowest dose of flecainde and not having had a real episode for ages, cardiologist advised me to increase it slightly. Hopefully your husband will be fine once the initial shock has sunk in, shock of the type you describe should not be under estimated.

Hope things settle i'm sure they will

Sorry to hear that you’ve had a similar shock. I’m sure that that was what caused it to happen.

Big thank you to everyone who replied. Our GP was concerned so sent my husband to A&E. Lots of tests & 6hrs 30 mins later all was declared well. He’s back in sinus. They’ll send all his results to the his consultant. They said they cannot be sure but yes shock can cause the symptoms he had.
